The Daily Misfortune 251

Turns out yesterday's Art-Con was a bust.  I was sick with a cold and busted my ass to get there too.  I had a bad time with the bus last time I went to the Whiskey Cafe and was late to Sketch Con last time, so I thought I could avoid buses by taking the subway to Times Square and then taking a cab - it's not that far into NJ.  But that morning 2 cabbies told me it was like $70!!  $13 for the toll, plus $50 for a fee from crossing state lines or something, plus the regular time rate.  So I ended up taking the bus after all.  The 10:30AM NJ Transit bus didn't even come.  Another one came 20 minutes later, and dropped me off in a different location than I remembered.  I dragged my suitcase to a nearby 7/11 and they gave me a number for a car service.  I was too exhausted to drag my stuff even a few blocks, but it was a good thing I got the car, because there weren't any sidewalks.  However, that 3 minute ride cost $10!  Stupid.

I was an hour late, but it didn't matter because there were no customers in sight.  There were about 9 vendors, and the whole time we just went to each others tables.  Most of the time I wish I had stayed in bed and rested to get over my cold.  But I ended up meeting great people which was cool - who knows where some connections could lead.

In any case, Art-Con wins worst convention I've exhibited at due to lack of foot traffic and lowest sales.  However, the table was only $30, so it's not like I lost $100 like at the Bronx Heroes Con.  I had expected Art-Con to be as great as Sketch Con was in February.  It was at the same location so that wasn't an issue, but I think the main difference was lack of good advertising and promotion.  But you win some, you lose some.  I did so well at Boston Comic Con last weekend that I'm still pumped from that.

Art-Con THIS SUNDAY!

Never a dull moment for mindy indy - I'm at it again this Sunday for a special artist convention in NJ:  "Art-Con."  50+ artists from the area will be showcasing their talents! Authors, painters, photographers, independent businesses owners, and more! Whiskey Cafe will also be open for business as usual! Come support our local artists! Art-Con is an opportunity for those in the creative and arts industry to display their work amongst like-minded individuals who are looking to show off their talents. Artists will be given their own tables to display, sell, and create their work for an audience of collectors and art enthusiasts. You show what you want to show, sell what you want to sell, and network with the people around you. Art-Con is meant to bring art of all kinds under one roof.

Whiskey Cafe is at 1050 Wall Street, Lyndhurst, New Jersey 07071

See you there!

Grove Alley Nite Market

Grove Alley Nite Market

I designed this flyer and logo for the Grove Alley Nite Market, happening this Friday!  NOTE:  I will NOT be at Grove Alley because I'm in the Wizard World convention.  But you can go to both if you like because Wizard is Saturday and Sunday as well.  Also of note is that the same people that put on the Gowanus Nite Market are involved with Grove Alley, so if you liked GNM, be sure to check this one out!  www.downtownbrooklyn.com for more info.

Make It On Myrtle

Make it on Myrtle

I designed this flyer and banner (below) for an awesome outdoor summer workshop:  Make it on Myrtle!  Workshops range from fixing your bike to brewing your own beer to making comics!  My teaching session on comics will be July 7th from 2 to 4pm.

Make it on Myrtle

We hung the banners today at the location in Brooklyn.  Found out there was random construction in the lot... hope it doesn't get in the way of the workshops.  Anyway, classes are 2 hours each from 11am to 1pm, then from 2pm to 4pm.  Register for a spot at www.myrtleavenue.org!

Make it on Myrtle

If you're in the Long Island area this Saturday June 15th, check out Eternal Con!  I'll be there all day.  Cheers!

Carmine Street Comics Going Strong!

Carmine Street Comics Last Wednesday was a great success for the opening of Carmine Street Comics!  A big crowd was steady from the afternoon onward.

mindy indy at Carmine Street Comics

I was sketching outside for the most part.  (Later on, I had to condense my drawings plastered all over the window.)  It got super cold in the evening and I had to borrow a coat :P

Ellen Stedfeld Carmine St Comics

My friend Ellen Stedfeld sketched in the small studio space the store had in the front window area.  The owners said they'll have "resident artists" on a rotating basis every day in the store!  My next day will be TOMORROW, Tuesday May 7th, ALL DAY!  Come for a sketch, check out the new store, chat, and/or hang out.  I'm excited about this new work space!

Carmine Street Comic Owners Michael Novo and Jon Gorga

Here are the proud owners of the store:  Michael Novo (left) and Jon Gorga (right).  What's extra cool is that hey, they're my age and owning a freakin' store.  You can do anything in life you put your mind to!  Of special note:  this store space is shared by Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books, that's been there like forever.  To save on rent (cuz hey, it's in the Village) that bookstore rented out 1/3 of their space.  Life in New York:  finding creative ways to make things work!

Can you tell that Sonic & Knuckles are my favorite?  (And they always have been!)

So be sure to stop by Carmine St. Comics on Tuesdays to check out my work!  See you tomorrow!  34 Carmine St. by the West 4th station.

Oh yes, and I did the Bronx Heroes Comic Con this past weekend.  Didn't go so well for me and other artists, but more on that later.  To be honest, I did better at this one event at Carmine Street Comics (and I wasn't even there the whole day!).

2 Shows, 1 Night: Recap

Last Saturday was pretty crazy - I had the Crohn's disease fundraiser/Arts Party, then the Gowanus Nite Market on the same night!  And after working a day job too!  If I thought about it all at once, I got freaked out, so I had to just take it one step at a time.  Luckily my energy held up pretty well throughout the night and it was successful overall.

Sky Room, where the fundraiser was at, is a pretty fancy place!  We were on the 34th floor I think, and the views were great.  I set up my table as usual, but this event didn't have much traffic flow like comic conventions or GNM - it was about 35 people standing around talking to each other, and I only did 2 sketches.  But hey, the table was free.  I got to see some friends and a few people I hadn't seen in awhile - some I had met at the East Village Arts Party last summer!

The event raised over $2,000!  That's a big jump for my friend Michelle's goal of $6,900 for her marathon.  Only $3K left to go.  I was glad I could contribute in a small way to this great cause.

I had to leave a bit early (around 9:30pm) and take a cab to the Gowanus Nite Market, already in progress.

GNM was hopping!  I had just gotten there and was setting up when already someone asked me for a sketch.  Off to a good start.

No time to set up my whole table, just had the comics I drew last week, my sign, and The Daily Misfortune books.

New to March's market was 2 bands.  I had missed the first, Adveta, but heard Oceanographer who was awesome!  I noticed that more single guys showed up just because of the bands.  Previously it seemed that most guys at any kind of flea/art market are dragged there by their girlfriends.

I get the most random creative requests at GNM!  A guy wanted a drawing of a school kid with a jar for a head, who was sad all the time because everyone could see inside his head and steal his ideas.

If this looks like Osama Bin Laden, I need to go back to art school.

The friends on the left said I drew the right guy too good-looking.  They suggested adding chest hair.  I added a shaver as well.  BEST SKETCH OF THE NIGHT.

Was it worth it to do 2 events in one night?  Well, I hoped I'd make twice the amount of money, but made less than I would have in one event because I had to miss the prime traffic time of both events.  Next time, I'll just pick the event I think will be most successful, but sometimes you have to try lots of different things because you never know.  Such problems are good to have though - it means I'm getting myself "out there" more.  I wonder what other good problems I'll have in the future.

Shout out to my friend Walter for going to BOTH events!

Vax Moto / GNM Tonight!

Vax Moto is a unique space for motor cyclists to work on their bikes indoors without worrying about packing up from the sidewalk by sundown.  For 2 years, Justin at Vax has been building a great community of enthusiastic cyclists who help each other with projects from replacing motor parts to building vintage motorcycles from scratch.  The name "Vax" is a combination of Justin's sons' names:  Van & Jax.  At 523 3rd Avenue, Vax Moto is just minutes away from GNM, happening tonight!  Come party with us!  Take the F, R, or G trains to the 4th Ave./9th St. stop, or ride your motorcycle to 61 9th St.  See you there!

718 Cyclery

Walking by 718 Cyclery, you may think it's just a bike repair shop, but it's so much more.  It's a place where you can buy bikes built from scratch and learn the skills to build ones yourself.  The founder of 718 is very passionate about sharing his knowledge of DIY to empower bikers everywhere to become "masters" of their bikes.  There's a great sense of community too - you can work with 718s team of mechanics to collaborate on your project and get as dirty as you want.  Bike on over to GNM this Saturday - it's almost here!

Brooklyn Boulders

Brooklyn Boulders is the place to get your adventure fix without ever leaving Brooklyn.  They have an enormous space on 575 Degraw St. that's jam packed with action.  Ever wanted to climb the Brooklyn Bridge?  Now's your chance - Brooklyn Boulders has a wall shaped just like it.  Love the atmosphere too - many walls are filled with beautiful colorful murals.

The Union Hotel

Today's characters are staying at the Union Hotel on 611 Degraw St. in Gowanus.  The hotel's exterior pays tribute to old school factories and warehouses, while its interior boasts chic design.  GNM has had many national and international visitors (as well as our awesome local crowd of course).  What better way to experience the true Brooklyn scene than at Gowanus Nite Market - a place like nowhere else.

The Underground Skate Scene

Skaters may know the main Homage Brooklyn on Bergen Street - a real skater owned and operated skate/snowboard shop.  But there's another Homage in Gowanus that has an actual indoor skate park inside!  Go to Homage Indoor on 615 Degraw Street for hours of skating fun.  If you've never skated, no problem - they have lessons for all ages.  Skate your way to Gowanus Nite Market this Saturday!  And yes, we did call it a party - with awesome bands added to the mix of all GNM has to offer, you're sure to party the night away.

GNM is back!

The Gowanus Nite Market is BACK this Saturday March 16th!  For this weeks theme, I'm drawing my specialty - comics!  The comics will feature different "hidden gems" of Gowanus that bring vitality to the neighborhood and make Gowanus a destination spot.  Today's comic characters are at Triple Diamond Tattoo at 257 3rd Ave.  When you step in, you're surrounded by a myriad of curious taxidermied animals, skulls, horns, and peacock feathers.  Definitely a quirky, hip, and inspirational environment for getting an awesome tattoo.  The owners, Jon Jon and Shannon, are super friendly too!  They opened shop in Gowanus about 7 months ago to bring an exciting new energy to the area.

If you aren't familiar with tattoos, the comic is referencing that you shouldn't drink alcohol before getting a tattoo because it thins your blood.  Be prepared:  get your tattoos this week before going to Gowanus Nite Market and enjoy tons of Brooklyn Brewery beer!

Gowanus Nite Market has released the official flyer for their next event on Saturday March 16th.  I'll be arriving at 10pm because I'm coming from another event (the Crohn's disease fundraiser at Sky Lounge).  This time, GNM will be held at Gowanus Loft 61 9th Street, Loft C8, Brooklyn.  There will also be live bands as well as DJ Chela.  Also new is beer!  As always, GNM is FREE.  RSVP here.  Hope to see you at one or both events!  Oh and GNM hours are extended until 2am!

Btw I didn't design this flyer, I did another version which they'll use for the next one.  But look, my name is up there!

ZAPP Comics Interview!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqlMUF7U698

At Sketch Con in February I was interviewed by ZAPP Comics!  I'm towards the end of the video.  Oh man, I sound like a total ditz though!  I was running on like 2 hours of sleep and exhausted from schlepping all my suitcases and crap through the snowy streets.  But anyway, this is out there in the cyber world.  It's great to be interviewed, but I need to keep in mind to sound more professional next time.

2 Events, 1 Night

Last week I posted about the arts event to raise funds for crohn's disease research on March 16th.  I found out the next Gowanus Nite Market is ALSO the same night!  Luckily there are only a few hours overlap, and GNM has been extended til 2AM.  I was frazzled about this at first, because why do the only 2 events I have in March have to be the same night.  But it's good that I have lots of things going on, and the more involved I get with new things, that's going to happen.

Times Square Arts Fundraiser for Crohn's & Colitis

I'll be in another art show on March 16 - a fancy one in Times Square!  My friend Michelle Kafel is running in a marathon to raise funds to help research for Crohn's disease, which her boyfriend Jordan suffers from.  Proceeds from the art show and auction will do towards her goal.  Buy tickets on eventbrite.  Read about Michelle and Jordan's touching story.

See the facebook invite that says about prizes they'll auction.  Check out Sky Room where the event will be held.  This event is a great way to have fun, support the arts, and support finding a cure for many who suffer from Crohn's and Colitis.  Hope to see you there!

Black Mountain Wine House

Black Mountain Wine House Things are coming together for the next Gowanus Nite Market in March - stay tuned.  In the meantime, get your Gowanus fix at Black Mountain Wine House.  The next in my Gowanus Love series, this has to be the most romantic setting yet.  The best feature of Black Mountain is the fireplace - I love the coziness and campfire smell.  It's a very welcome environment from the harsh windy coldness of winter.  The lights are dim and walls are lined with bottles of wine.  Michael, the manager, said his favorite wine is tempranillo.  He also gave a little history of the venue - the building started as a pharmacy, then a bakery, an artist's gallery, and now the Wine House.  Black Mountain also has a kitchen that's open until midnight, serving tapas and a variety of cheeses.  Come on a Tuesday for "Fondue Tuesdays."  Come on New Year's and drink out of a gigantic wine glass that's about 2 feet tall!

Black Mountain Wine House 415 Union St (between Smith St & Hoyt St), Brooklyn, NY 11231

Sketch Con 2013 Recap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nA2dYkVcOE&feature=youtu.be Here's a good overview of the awesome atmosphere of Sketch Con 2013!  Great crowd and great music.  It was a FIASCO getting there though.  Had to wait 40 minutes for my bus at NY Port Authority (where the buses go to NJ).  I need to learn that they only come once an hour on Sundays.  The bus ride itself was super short, but the bus dropped me off on the side of the road, and since we just had a huge snowstorm, the sidewalk was covered in a foot of snow.  I had to trudge my suitcase and all my crap down the slushy street for 10-15 minutes.  Luckily there wasn't much traffic, but I kept thinking "The things I do for my passion!"  I can think of a lot of people who would've just turned around, but I'd already gotten that far.  I'm SO GLAD it turned out to be worth the trouble!  Even though I arrived late, the crowd was just picking up.  I had to get the smallest table though:

But I made it work.  Y'know, the more shows I do, the more stuff I have on my table.  I focused on the sketches.

First sketch of the day:  adorable baby!  To save time, I'm not going to post all my sketches.  Even though I love doing this blog, the convention posts are taking too much time (gotta touch up all the pictures, crop, resize them, write something witty, etc).  I really gotta focus more time on creating art and getting more work, so I'm going to only post a few sketches.  If you don't see your sketch here but would like to share it with the world, you can upload it to my mindy indy facebook page.

mindy indy sketch of 4 friends

Yes, they all held perfectly still for 20 minutes while I drew them!.... No not really, I took the picture first :P

A couple wanted me to start with a picture of their friend's dog, and then get creative with it.  The answer = a flying doggie!  I wish my camera took better pictures.  I was in a rush and couldn't tell if it was blurry on the small camera preview screen :/

So the theme of this convention was supposed to be "Fairy Tale Nightmares."  Evil Tinkerbell is my interpretation.  Creepy, I know.  I don't think many other people went with the theme, but it's a good starting point.

Sketch Con was super successful and it was totally worth the trip there.  I just have to think of more efficient ways of getting to NJ... I only know so many people with cars, y'know :P

Which is why I didn't drink any whiskey at the Whiskey Cafe.  I can't get any work done if I have alcohol.  This of course doesn't apply to some of my friends who can mysteriously work BETTER with booze.
