Holiday Commissions are Open!

bat_snow2-web.jpg

It’s that time of year, there’s a chill in the air, it’s close to Thanksgiving, and you realize “Oh crap, I need to get presents for people!” What better present than personalized artwork? If you’ve gotten a sketch from me before, you know how happy it’s made you and others. (If you haven’t yet, please see my folio) The great thing about custom art is that it’s different each time! Give the gift of awesomeness to your kids when they see themselves as their favorite superhero! Give the gift of laughter to your spouse when they see your pet as THEIR favorite superhero!

No shame in giving YOURSELF a gift too! I’ll let you in on a family tradition of the Mystery Present. On Christmas, we pass around a present that’s untagged and everyone shakes it. Often it’s wrapped very garishly/strangely with many boxes nested inside each other. The first year I think it was my mom that started handing the gift off to people and it ended up being for HER! The gift of laughter! All this is to say that YOU could totally get a custom sketch for yourself and start a mystery present tradition of your own XD

Sketches are 5”x7”. Ink is $40 for one figure +$20 per additional figure. Color is $50 for one figure +$25 per additional figure. Larger sizes like 8”x10” available upon request.

If you want a whole custom comic drawn about how you met your spouse, or your first Christmas or Hanukkah together, or about how your kids are awesome, send me an email to mindy at mindyindy dot com and we can work it out! You can also get your office to pitch in for a custom comic honoring a special leader or coworker.

I take Paypal and credit cards via Square Invoices. Super easy & convenient.

I’m leaving for vacation on December 18, (about a month away from now) so get your orders in ASAP so I can add you to my project cue!

Hope everyone has Happy Holidays!

Dr. Mac Attack!

This is the latest custom comic I made!  For my friend Susie's dentist - Dr. Mac!  He helped her a lot over the years as she's undergone various jaw surgeries, and she wanted to give him a special gift.  Years ago, our other friend Katie helped make a cape for him (pictured here, with logo [M for Mac and it's also a Molar]) and Susie took it a step further with this comic idea.  Susie also gave me great reference pictures for the specific tools her dentist uses, like the headlamp and special microscope glasses (pictured below).

This is a great example of how custom comics can be for ANYONE, not just couples!  Custom comics can really highlight the amazing qualities of a special person.

I made a special delivery and gave the comic to him at her appointment!  Quoting the Dr.:  "This is the coolest thing I've ever seen!"  SMILES ALL AROUND!

I actually have no fear of the dentist.  I always make the appointments super early so I'm too tired to care what they're doing.

FD Comics Success

I'm happy to say that "No Tears" is approaching virality on Facebook!  Almost every person that "liked" the comic also "shared" it!  People really related to this particular comic.

More Custom Comics!

Custom Comic Custom Comic framed

I updated the Custom Comics page of this site!  Before Christmas I squeezed in this rush project with great results!  This client found me just through Google!  If you Google "custom comic" I'm now on THE FIRST PAGE!  TWICE!!  Yay for key words!  (Custom comic, custom comic, custom comic!!  Let's get to the TOP of the first page now :)

Here's what the client had to say:

“Mindy’s work is beyond incredible!  Mindy is an absolute pleasure to work with.  I could not be more pleased with the custom comic she created for me.  She was able to get the project done on a very quick timeline, and mailed it to me a day ahead of schedule. No matter what style of comic you are looking for, I am sure Mindy can make it happen for you.  I cannot recommend her enough!”

I love doing stuff like this.  I'm using my talents to make people happy and also get $ - a win-win situation!  If you'd like a custom comic for a friend, significant other, family member, or anyone, please contact me at mindy@mindyindy.com.  Thank you!

An internet meme is usually a picture with funny bold words that goes viral, for those who don't know :)  LOL cats are a classic example.  You'll see memes all over any social media site.  Some people have said that The Daily Misfortune is "almost a meme."  So I'm almost famous and almost an internet sensation?  Hmm just gotta try a little harder.

Hakuna Matata

Did you know that people with FD can eat and talk perfectly at the same time?  The "secret power" of a feeding tube.  People on facebook really liked that the kid with FD is happy here.

Comics for the Dysautonomia Foundation

First off, Happy New Year!  Mindy indy is back to blogging after a break for the holidays.  I've been making a lot of custom comics lately!  This one is for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation.  Familial Dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic neurological condition that affects the sensory and autonomic nervous systems, causing severe gastrointestinal, cardiac, pulmonary, orthopedic, renal and ophthalmologic problems.  The Dysautonomia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity that supports medical treatment, research, public awareness and social services for the benefit of people afflicted with FD. The Foundation has established the world's only two FD treatment centers and is the largest single source of funding for research and treatment specifically for the benefit of people with FD.

The FD Foundation contacted me after meeting me at the Toys on the Hudson convention.  They wanted a comic to brighten up their Facebook Page.  The comic is educational for people not familiar with the condition, and is also something that families and people with FD can relate to.  I did 3 comics so far for them, and they'll want me to do more if it gets good responses on Facebook, so please "share" and "like" the comic on their page!  Thanks a bunch!

AER HEAD the boxer

I've just finished drawing this page!  Aeryan boxes as well as surfs.  Rocky was my main influence on this aspect of his character :)  Aeryan can predict the future sometimes in his dreams, and I wanted to balance that mental power out with physical strength.  This comes in handy for Aer later in the series ;)

I wanted to post a recent drawing in time for MoCCA Fest this weekend.  It's a smallish comic convention that focuses on more independent cartoonists and small press.  It raises money for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, the museum I teach at.  Last year, I thought "next year, when I have the first book of Aer Head all done and published, I'm gonna get a table!" ... and I'm saying the same thing this year :/  I drew a lot this past year, but I need to push myself harder.  It takes serious discipline to focus on drawing at the end of the day when I'm tired from working other jobs.  But mark my words, when this comic is finally finished, it will be totally awesome :)  Just tonight, I was at a comic book release signing at Desert Island Comics, and I told the owner, Gabe, "when I get Aer Head published, I want to have an event here" and he was cool with it :)

More Custom Comics

Mindy indy is back with another custom comic I've done for a client.  The client is actually my cousin who is an art teacher in Florida!  She's also a very versatile artist herself.  I had lots of creative freedom with this comic - she gave me a basic idea and just let me run with it.  She wanted the comic as a piece of art for her, but also to use in her classroom as an example of what a real working artist does.  I thought it would be encouraging for the kids to see a comic about how fun it is to draw comics :)  This comic is also added to my "Custom Comics" page (there's a link on the upper right of this page), which tells more about custom comics, my rates, and more.  Please check it out!

Custom Comics

So far mindyindy.com has focused on AER HEAD, the graphic novel I'm (slowly) working on.  My freelance work has been picking up, though, and I want to share some other comic work I've done recently - a custom comic! Custom comic created for a client. Alex, bolting out of work, uses his super speed to get to the party in time, but his friend's super drinking abilities beat him.

A custom comic is a comic specifically made about someone, usually as a gift.  In this case, the client wanted one about her boyfriend for his birthday.  The client told me many details about her boyfriend's personality and life, and sent pictures for reference.  We discussed the format of the comic (3 panel strip vs full page, color vs black and white), I drew it, and voila:  the perfect birthday gift!  Both the client and her boyfriend love it and intend to hang it in their new apartment.  There was even talk of being Action Alex for Halloween!  This was super fun and I want to do more of these projects!

I put a new Custom Comics page in this blog's upper right corner, listing my rates and more details.  If you would like me to create a custom comic for you, just send me an email (mindy@mindyindy.com) or call 734-776-6477 so we can discuss details.
