Saying Goodbye to A 7 Year Web Comic - No Tears: Life With FD / FD Heroes IRL

FDman-girl-anyone-web.jpg

The only thing you can count on is change! I’ve really been blessed to work with the Dysautonomia Foundation on a very niche and meaningful web comic for the past 7 years, but now the foundation is going in a new direction. In 2012, I met David Brenner and his son Michael at a small comic con in Jersey (Toys on the Hudson in the fall). David (then director of the foundation) had been thinking of a FD comic for awhile since his son loved comics. He loved how my Misfortune Cookie mini comics featured unfortunate subjects in a lighthearted manner, and knew I was the right fit to make his ideas a reality.

The very first No Tears: Life With FD comic! Created in January 2013

The very first No Tears: Life With FD comic! Created in January 2013

Backing up a bit, FD stands for Familial Dysautonomia, a rare Jewish genetic neurological disorder that effects the sensory and autonomic nervous systems. For example people with FD may have trouble swallowing so they need a feeding tube, as in the comic above. I’ve also done a few comics featuring the BiPap machine, because sometimes people with FD have trouble breathing while sleeping. The comic’s title has a double meaning - one of the symptoms of FD is the absence of overflow tears / corneal drying. The title also encourages FD patients and their families to have hope through their daily struggles. Topics in the comic series range from dealing with specific FD situations, like Crisis, to social scenarios of persons with disabilities, and more. The comic has always had a light-hearted and touching theme focusing on the closeness of families.

uncertainty.jpg

In the beginning, David wrote the scripts and I hand drew (and even hand-lettered) the comic, coloring it on the computer. It would be posted each week on the foundation’s Facebook Page.

MissSchool-web.jpg

In 2016, sadly David Brenner passed away from cancer and was dearly missed by all. I wondered if the comic would continue, since it had personal ties to David himself. But the interim director, Paul Schack, was happy to continue the comic. It became more of a collaborative endeavor, as I suggested more script ideas and eventually wrote the scripts all by myself, with some edits by Paul. This is the first comic script that was all my own. I also switched to creating the whole comic digitally using my wacom tablet, and turning my handwriting into a font for digital lettering.

Dating-web.jpg

Previously the comic had different characters for each strip, with a few recurring characters like a family with a newborn baby with FD. But when I wrote the script, (and also thinking of fresh subjects for the strip) I had lots of creative freedom to explore subjects like special needs dating with recurring characters Adam and Ariel. And I also loved featuring FD Man and FD Girl (top comic) for positive messages! David originally came up with the idea for FD Man, but FD Girl was one of my additions to the comic, and they made a great team!

AndrewS-web.jpg

In late 2018, the Dysautonomia Foundation hired a permanent new director, Lanie Etkind. Again, I wondered if the comic would continue. In 2019, Lanie and others at the foundation suggested focusing on real people who had FD for the comic, like a spotlight. Thus, “FD Heroes IRL” was born! People with FD who were interested in being featured reached out to me and I asked them some questions. I then created a script from their responses (this is much like how I work with people to create custom comics). The FD community loved the new comic too! Andrew S’s comic, above, was personally very inspiring to me because he didn’t let FD stop him from going on an awesome road trip!

And well, since the community is small (it’s a rare disease affecting only 200 people on Earth), the comic has seemed to run its course. I’m so happy to have been involved with the FD community and have contributed to making their days a bit brighter through the comic. Really, it’s amazing the comic has ran for 7 years! I’ve learned so much about FD and always tell new people I meet about the disease and the comic when they ask about what I do as an artist. Spreading awareness!

Comic in memory of Scott Fass, who passed away from FD.

I found the comic work I’ve done for the FD Foundation to be incredibly rewarding and I feel like the comic touched people’s lives, even if in a small way. I like working with non-profits because of the meaningful impact. For a few years I also did a comic for the RLS Foundation called “Night Walkers.” When one door closes, another one opens. I’m definitely open to continuing my comics journey with other non-profits! Please forward this blog post or tag someone on social media who you think would be interested in working with me to create comics that have a positive impact on people who may be going through struggles of any kind.

Jews and Rock Art Exhibit starts Sunday 2/10!

jews and rock brochure cover.jpg

One of my comics will be displayed in the Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery this Sunday! For over 6 years I’ve drawn a weekly web comic for the Dysautonomia Foundation called “No Tears: Life With FD.” FD stands for Familial Dysautonomia, a rare Jewish genetic neurological disorder that effects the sensory and autonomic nervous systems. The comic’s title has a double meaning - one of the symptoms of FD is the absence of overflow tears / corneal drying. The title also encourages FD patients and their families to have hope through their daily struggles. The comic has always had a light-hearted and touching theme focusing on the closeness of families.

This is the comic that will be featured! For the past few years, I’ve been writing the scripts as well, and this strip was inspired by my love of music.

Here’s the eventbrite for the show opening.

Working With Writers

"Computing" by Writer Patrick McEvoy and Artist Mindy Indy

"Computing" by Writer Patrick McEvoy and Artist Mindy Indy

Here's another one-shot comic page I created with writer Patrick McEvoy!  I love his techie futuristic themes.  Also, couldn't help throwing in another disco-ball pattern in the computer room in the first panel.  (Side note - the window and last panel colors were inspired by Sonic 2's Oil Ocean Zone).  It's great that Patrick is cool with whatever I come up with, as writers should allow freedom for the artist to do what they do best!  He was also open to suggestions I had for making the second panel two separate panels, so it's more clear that we are zooming into the computer's circuitry.

The Papercutz team on the Charmz School panel at NYCC 2016!  Left to right:  Sven Larsen (marketing), Jeff Whitman (editorial), Janice Chiang (letterer), Mindy Indy (penciler/inker/colorist), Amy Chu (writer), and not pictured is Jay Jay J…

The Papercutz team on the Charmz School panel at NYCC 2016!  Left to right:  Sven Larsen (marketing), Jeff Whitman (editorial), Janice Chiang (letterer), Mindy Indy (penciler/inker/colorist), Amy Chu (writer), and not pictured is Jay Jay Jackson (penciler/inker/colorist) who joined us later in the panel!

Working with others was one of our discussion topics on the Charmz School panel at NYCC.  letterer Janice Chiang and writer Amy Chu talked about how they worked together on many projects over the years, as writing and lettering are very intertwined.  Jay Jay Jackson and I are both "triple-threat" penciler/inker/colorists, so we talked about our experiences working with others, but also benefits of being sole creators of comics.

NYCC's line up of panels was MUCH better than last years!  I targeted other writing panels too, as I'm working on rewriting AER HEAD, and panelists kept suggestingfor writers to start working with an artist on one-page comics before delving into their magnum opus.  This is great, because it helps both writer and artist develop their communications to see if they work well with each other.

This is something that people don't really think about.  Lots of indie creators are just so excited to get their work out there, that they don't take the time to get to know their team-mates working style:  Do they respond to email timely?  If not, was there a good reason?  Do they ask lots of questions to ensure clarity?  If not, they may end up doing extra work over changes.  What is their schedule like?  Do they prefer to work late at night?  All of these things and more can be ironed out with a one-page comic before committing to too much if you realize you're not working well together.

I also work with writers in the FD Foundation and RLS Foundation for our weekly and monthly comic strips.  My first boss for "No Tears:  Life With FD," David Brenner, usually sent me the script and I drew it: easy-peasy.  Occasionally, I'd offer suggestions (like "I don't think a kid would say it that way"), and sometimes he'd agree and we'd change the script, but usually the script stayed "as-is."  My new boss for No Tears, Paul Schack, and also the team at the RLS Foundation are very open to my script suggestions.  They give me the dialogue and I'd sketch it out, realizing that it would be better if some things were changed in the script or action description.  Sometimes it's a back-and-forth process, which leads to a better finished comic!  For example, the No Tears comic above was originally scripted with just the bottom 2 panels, but I suggested we insert a 3rd panel in the beginning giving more explanation that October is Dysautonomia Awareness month.  YAY TEAMWORK!

Jay Jay Jackson and I were talking later on about how we don't like Robert McKee's "Story," a book about screenwriting.  It's supposed to be this really great book, but it's so old that I don't get half the movie references, and the writing is pretty dry.  I have the book sitting next to my bed, for when insomnia strikes it helps put me to sleep.

Honorary Custom Comic!

Some of you may have seen the weekly No Tears:  Life With FD comics I create and share on Facebook.  FD stands for Familial Dysautonomia, a very rare disease.  The guy who writes the scripts for the comics, David Brenner, the FD Foundation's executive director, has worked there for a whole decade!  Some people from the foundation reached out to me and we came up with the idea to make him a custom comic as a special honorary gift!  They wanted to depict David as a Navy Seal, the most specially trained, technology savvy, and elite fighters of the USA.  I definitely listened to the In the Navy song a lot while working on this :)  (Can anyone find the Beatles Yellow Submarine "Easter Egg" I placed in there?)  I made the comic in a record time of 8 days, along with my teaching job and other duties.  I presented the comic at last Sunday's FD Day, their annual conference.  Everyone loved it!

Usually I draw custom comics for couples, as you can see from the custom comics section on my site.  It's a great way to tell the story of how the couple met, got engaged, and so on!  But I think the honorary custom comics are extra special.  Sometimes the couples comics are just for 2 people, unless they're displayed at a wedding reception.  But the honorary comics can be displayed in the office and seen by everyone!  It's kind of like a visual resume - if you're new to the company, or not as familiar with the honoree's day-to-day work, you can tell what a hard worker and amazing role model the person is in the comic!

Computer Crash!!

There I was last Saturday night, working on some sketches for a client in Photoshop, when suddenly the screen went spaZoid, then black.  I remained calm.  But then I started to worry when my computer wouldn't restart!  I immediately made a Genius Bar appointment for the next day at the 24-hour Apple store (yes, we have one of those in NYC :)

Basically it was a problem with the laptop's logic board, and apparently was a defect of some early 2011 computers, because they fixed it for free!  Thank God, because it would have been like $600 otherwise, and this computer is 5 years old, so I'd probably only get another year out of it anyway.

Luckily, I wasn't too worried about data loss because I back up via Crash Plan!!  It's basically cloud backup.  At first, when my external hard drive crashed a few years ago, the concept of backing up to some unknown location was scary to me, but it actually works out very well!  Before, with my external HD, I'd only backup at the end of the day (or every few days), but this way I backup continuously.  I had to redo some stuff on the one file I was working on at the time of the crash, but all other files I'd worked on that day were fine.  But seriously, if I didn't have the comfort of cloud backup, this situation could have been A TOTAL DISASTER.

But the Mac doctors had to take my computer away to do some operations for a few days.  I had separation anxiety, as I'm protective of my laptop to a ridiculous degree.  They said it could take 5 business days, but I insisted it had to be fixed by Thursday, as I have a weekly deadline (the No Tears: Life With FD comic!  Colored digitally in Photoshop).  Of course, there is never a good time for a crash to happen, but when an artist relies heavily on their computer to get work done for many clients, it's a tough situation!  I was very adamant about this, and the Mac doctors were very understanding.  I did have some physical drawings for a custom comic that needed to be done in the meantime though, so I was still productive.  Luckily, they fixed my Mac 2 days early!  The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

And so far all files and programs are OK and running smoothly (knock on wood).  The Mac doctors didn't have to wipe my drive, so I didn't even need to spend the time re-uploading everything from Crash Plan and was able to jump right back into work!  Given everything that happened, with so many points at which things could take a turn for the worse, this situation turned out pretty damn good!

Film & Comic Fest TONIGHT! And Drawing Table Alert!

fest.png

Tonight's the night!  Come to the LES Films & Comic Fest any time from 7p - 11:30p!  Not sure if I mentioned before, but there's a $5 benefit contribution & 1 drink min to enter, and it's a 21+ event.  Lovecraft Bar 50 Ave B near the Delancey/Essex stop.  See you tonight!

I bought an adjustable drawing table about a year and a half ago, and last night it collapsed on me while I was drawing the weekly No Tears:  Life With FD comic.  As I had the desktop in an upright drawing position, the right hinge became unbolted and started to fall on me.  Luckily I caught it and my roomie came to help me get it back in the level resting position.  The holes where the screws went looked really worn for some reason.  PIECE OF CRAP.  Granted, I got this at Michael's on sale for like $80, but it's supposed to be worth $200 (yeah right!)  It was marketed as a "crafting" table... but what if a kid or old lady had this happen to them?  The desktop could have fallen on their leg or foot.  NOBODY BUY the "Arts and Crafts Creative Center" by Studio Designs, Inc.    Now I have to get a new drawing table - a legit one this time.

DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP.  IT IS DANGEROUS AND WILL BREAK ON YOU.

"The Forward" spotlights my work on "No Tears: Life With FD"

"The Forward," a Jewish American online magazine focusing on politics, arts, and culture, recently highlighted my work on the weekly comic "No Tears:  Life With FD."  There's a video of me creating the comic strip.  The video also shows David Brenner, executive director of the FD Foundation, talking about Familial Dysautonomia and how this comic has helped connect patients, families, and others beyond.

Read the corresponding article here:  http://forward.com/culture/318404/sketching-life-with-a-rare-disease/  It came out wonderfully!  I also love how I'm referred to as "Indy," like how reporters refer to interviewees by their last name.  The only thing is that I don't live in Manhattan anymore, haha!  Thea interviewed me in the midst of all my moving boxes!  I made sure to warn her that she'd be walking into the middle of a tornado, but she was cool with it.  You have to be prepared for some things, y'know?

All in all, it's been great to be involved with the FD community for so long, and to touch people with the comics I create.  Hopefully this article and video will spread more awareness of Familial Dysautonomia.

And Boston Comic Con was a great success!  Special thanks again to my friend Jennie Wood for sharing her table space!  I got lucky and was on the corner of an aisle - more visibility!  Also the AirBnB was AWESOME!!!  I stayed with an older couple in what was practically a mansion.  The bathroom alone was bigger than my room in Harlem.  It was a whirlwind trip though, taking Megabus at 6AM going there, and this Daily Misfortune happened on the midnight bus back.  I switched seats with the guy so he could lean on the window instead of me :P

HAPPY NEW YEAR! YAY 2015!

Happy New Year!  This is one of the holiday comics I created for the FD Foundation - over 100 comics and still going strong!  I should really share more of these...

I was on vacation for 2 weeks in Michigan - one of the great things about freelancing is being flexible with my work hours.  However, I still had to work very hard to accomplish all my projects before I left for the break!  But now I'm back and the new year is off to a great start!  One of my 2015 resolutions is to do even better with the business side of freelancing.  I have lots of other exciting ideas and plans in the works and I can't wait to share them with you!

The Daily Misfortune continues!  So my apartment building is pretty old and has these heat pipes that make such awful loud screeching noises that wake me up in the middle of the night.  Last Saturday they made the place super hot!  Not only because it was warmer weather outside, but those pipes were on full blast all day and night!  The next day, even though the temperature outside was the same, inside it decreased dramatically.  Someday I'll live in a place with my own thermostat.

Crazy Busy

Yesterday I was supposed to fly back to New York from Detroit - how the hell did I end up in South Carolina?  Spirit Airlines, that's how.

I think this is the busiest I've ever been in my life - even moreso than finals in college, because I wasn't travelling the country.  When was my last blog post... before NYCC Special Edition?  That convention went pretty well, albeit surprisingly slow at times, with it being at Javits.  But met some nice peeps and I even got to see Maki from the Penny Arcade "Strip Search" reality show.

The day after that 2-day convention, I flew to Michigan to be in a friend's wedding.  Weddings are always fun, especially when you're in the bridal party :)  It was fun to reconnect with friends and dance, and visit Ann Arbor again.  Got to spend some time with family, but I still have that Power Rangers coloring work amidst everything, so it wasn't a true "vacation" to relax.

Right now I'm en route to Baltimore for the Graphic Medicine Conference.  I'm giving a 15-minute presentation with David Brenner of the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation for our work on the comic strip "No Tears:  Life With FD."  You can see the whole program of awesome stuff here and our presentation is called "Comic Strip as Connection, Identification and Education for Rare Disease."  At first we were part of the shorter "lightning round" talks, but someone cancelled and we were upgraded to a longer talk at 1pm Friday.

Oh yeah, and the reason I'm in South Carolina now is because my flight back to NYC was cancelled yesterday.  I was supposed to fly back to NYC, unpack stuff, pack stuff I needed for the convention (besides the talk, there's a small convention for the conference on Saturday), and take Bolt Bus to Baltimore today.  Since all the flights were booked until Saturday, the best Spirit could do was fly me to Myrtle Beach, then Baltimore today.  I won't have all the things that are usually at my table for the mini convention, but I'll make it work with what I do have.

It's now cheaper to check bags than have a carry-on.  I'll need to look more closely at all the extra fees when getting flights next time.  After I got my new flight settled, when I saw it had a connection, I was expecting them to lose my luggage, after the run-around I got yesterday.  Luckily I was able to get them to upgrade my little luggage as a carry-on, so no way I'm losing anything.  Although the part in The Daily Misfortune about losing luggage and it being sent to the wrong address actually happened with Delta a few years ago.  It got sent to my friend's address - the same one who got married this past weekend.  Everything comes full-circle!

Happy Earth Day!

This is what I drew for last week's weekly "No Tears:  Life With FD" comic.  I wanted to spice up the usual visuals of people standing around talking, and used a zooming in kind of areal view (that's Union Square!).  TOTAL COINCIDENCE it features Earth and it's Earth Day today!  Go outside today and enjoy the Earth!  Or recycle, or something.

"Earthrise" yep, took that pic myself, of course... yes there's no question...

"Earthrise" yep, took that pic myself, of course... yes there's no question...

I'm also a total science nerd and watched some interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson saying something about how Earth Day and many environmental laws were created soon after the moon landing, because of the picture "Earth Rise."  It was the first time humanity had seen the Earth from space in all its natural beauty, without country borders like on a map or globe.  It took man going to the moon to fully appreciate the Earth.

One Step at a Time

No Tears: Life With FD This is the latest Familial Dysautonomia comic - No Tears:  Life With FD.  I took part in writing this one!  I was inspired by a book I got on FD day by Alexia De Gunzberg called Steps of Life:  Exceeding Boundaries.  In the book, Alexia describes in vivid detail the difficulties of having a disability and her journey to overcoming them.  The first part of the book involves getting the courage to cross the street by herself for the first time.  Think about it - many of us cross the street without thinking, but it's a big deal when you have a walker, don't move as fast, and may endanger yourself if you fall.  Alexia is very strong willed and inspiring, and I hope you get the chance to read this great book!

Meanwhile, it's gotten to that point.  Hmm should've put this Daily Misfortune with the Power Rangers blog last week where they actually DO fight a trash monster :)

New Monthly Comic!

I'm excited to share with you a new monthly comic!  Formerly called RLS, or Restless Legs Syndrome, the WED (Willis-Ekbom Disease) Foundation has commissioned me to do a monthly comic!  You may have heard of Restless Legs Syndrome and thought "oh now they're making up diseases" (even people I told about the strip did!).  One of the goals of this comic is to spread the knowledge that this is actually a serious condition that really affects quality of life for a lot of people.  Basically, because people (it mostly affects women) who have WED get intense pain in their legs at night, they need to get up to try to relieve the pain and it causes insomnia.  Having experienced insomnia myself at times, I can relate to the tolls it can take.

A person that's involved with both the WED Foundation and the FD Foundation (that I do the weekly No Tears:  Life With FD strip for) made this connection happen.  And what's extra cool is that the WED Foundation is based in Minnesota!  (Go Midwest!)  I love that I'm now getting work from people I haven't even met in person.  I've heard a lot that American companies are hiring artists from other countries to work for cheap, which bothers me.  I've also heard of some language miscommunication that happens because of this, and the comic turns out ok, but some details are wrong.  But I'm happy to say that my communication has been great over phone and email for this project and another project I did previously.  Don't hire overseas artists - hire mindy indy for your comics to get the best quality of work :)

Here's an FD comic from a few weeks ago:

When they said "the setting is in a mall" I of course had to put one of my favorite stores, Hot Topic, in the background.  And Cinnabon :)  When I was drawing this I wanted a Cinnabon SO BAD!  I kind of got carried away with all the details... there's a lot of stuff in malls!

FD Day

So I've been creating a weekly comic for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation (which I haven't posted in awhile here, but they always post it on their facebook).  This Sunday is FD Day, a conference for people and families affected by the condition, but it's also open to the public if you're curious!  They'll have a lot of NYU doctors talking about new research, treatments, and other stuff.  I'll be there sketching for the kids in a room with other fun stuff like a magician and balloon animals.

Here are some FD comics to catch up on - No Tears:  Life With FD.

On this comic, the Foundation and I were trying to come up with good places for the group of people to be in - what if the grumpy old man was a bus driver?  No, some FD people have difficulty getting on buses.  What if he was a barber, or at a movie ticket counter?  Those were ok, but I came up with something I encounter regularly:  grumpy people at the checkout lane :)

This was one of my personal favorites :)  Although the FD community online prefers the really sweet ones vs the LOL ones (this one got only like 2,000 "views" as opposed to the usual over 10,000).

Like this is a really sweet one.  People went NUTS over this one!

And people really responded to this one well.  Lots of good comments flying around on the web.

Carmine Street Comics Studio

Mindy Indy at the Carmine Street Comics studio space. Hey peeps!  Tuesday was super nice at Carmine Street Comics.  The picture above shows more of what their little studio set up is like.  The artist sits on that elevated platform in the front window of the store.  I was actually successful at luring some curious new people into the store!  (well, "luring" may not be the best word, but you know what I mean).  The desk space is just big enough for me to work on my comic pages.  That day I worked on drawing and inking the weekly comic I do for the Dysautonomia Foundation - No Tears:  Life With FD.  It was super great and super chill drawing at that space.  I had a nice big window, the door was open and let in the fresh spring air, but best of all - I got to talk with comic peeps every so often!  Saw some friends, met some new people, talked about comic stuff.  MUCH better than just working on stuff alone at home and going stir crazy (and more productive too, since it's not easy to climb up and down from there all the time, I'm not distracted).  And hey, I even sold a book, so that was a nice extra bonus!

Each day Carmine St. Comics has rotating artists drawing in the window.  Today (Thursday) is Ellen Stedfeld's turn.  Friday is Sean Von Gorman's turn, and he's having a special party event.  He has a book out:  The Secret Adventures of Houdini.  Sean usually does an escape act of some kind during his events.  In his own words: "When I crash a party ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN!"  So stop by Carmine St. Comics this Friday May 10th anytime from 2pm to 10pm to witness the insanity.  I may or may not be there (gotta prep for Kids Comic Con THIS WEEKEND).

Also, Carmine St. Comics Community Showcase is going on next Wednesday May 15th 11am-10pm!  ALL of the daily window artists will be there at some point of the day sketching, signing, partying, having an all-around good time!  Special prizes available to customers of the store!

All this awesome stuff going on at 34 Carmine St. in Manhattan off the West 4th stop.  Look for the big green awning that says Imperialist Bookstore, and the Carmine St. Comics sign will be underneath it.  GOOD TIMES!

FD Comics Success

I'm happy to say that "No Tears" is approaching virality on Facebook!  Almost every person that "liked" the comic also "shared" it!  People really related to this particular comic.

How do you pronounce that?

"Dysautonomia" is a really long word, sounds similar to other things, and is hard to remember for those unfamiliar with it.  Even when I'm talking with people about this strip, some of them have trouble with the word, so imagine the frustrations people living with FD have to go through communication-wise, on top of the condition itself.

Hakuna Matata

Did you know that people with FD can eat and talk perfectly at the same time?  The "secret power" of a feeding tube.  People on facebook really liked that the kid with FD is happy here.

Comics for the Dysautonomia Foundation

First off, Happy New Year!  Mindy indy is back to blogging after a break for the holidays.  I've been making a lot of custom comics lately!  This one is for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation.  Familial Dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic neurological condition that affects the sensory and autonomic nervous systems, causing severe gastrointestinal, cardiac, pulmonary, orthopedic, renal and ophthalmologic problems.  The Dysautonomia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity that supports medical treatment, research, public awareness and social services for the benefit of people afflicted with FD. The Foundation has established the world's only two FD treatment centers and is the largest single source of funding for research and treatment specifically for the benefit of people with FD.

The FD Foundation contacted me after meeting me at the Toys on the Hudson convention.  They wanted a comic to brighten up their Facebook Page.  The comic is educational for people not familiar with the condition, and is also something that families and people with FD can relate to.  I did 3 comics so far for them, and they'll want me to do more if it gets good responses on Facebook, so please "share" and "like" the comic on their page!  Thanks a bunch!
