Eternal Con THIS SATURDAY!

This Saturday June 15th I'm in a new comic convention in Long Island NY:  Eternal Con!  The beautiful space of the Cradle of Aviation Museum will host this event with 2 floors of Pop Culture Madness! In addition to the huge vendor space they'll have raffles, giveaways, costumes, special guests, a car show in the parking lot, diorama contests, movie screening, full access to the Cradle of Aviation Museum (with paid admission) and much more!  I kind of want to check out the museum, because I love outer space and stuff, but I'll be in Artist's Alley all day.

Cradle of Aviation Museum Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Garden City, NY 11530

You can get there by LIRR from Manhattan or Brooklyn for public transit, or by car if you have access.

Show hours are 10am - 6pm.  Admission is $14 adults and $12 for kids under 12.  Free parking!  Hope to see you there, and please spread the word!

DOUBLE RAINBOW!

I LOVE double rainbows!  I've seen some before and yes, they are very intense.  I learned about how rainbows occur in a "Naked Eye Astronomy" class in college (stuff you can see without a telescope), but you can also learn more here.

The Daily Misfortune 207

I just found out that spammers have been putting links into my mailing list posts.  If you see a link by itself just below the first picture I post, It's spam!  It may look like this:

It's NOT a "useful site" - it's spam!  Sometimes it says "quick cash advance with commissions."  I'm not sure if the spam is coming from this Wordpress blog or Feedburner (the program I use for my mailing list).  The spam link isn't visible on my regular website page or even the HTML - only in the emails sent (that's why it's good to sign yourself up on your own mailing list!)  It may be awhile until I figure out how to stop it (adding one more freakin' thing on my TO DO list), but until I do, please ignore those links.  Sorry about that!

Kids Comic Con VS. Bronx Heroes Con

Bronx Heroes Con 2013 Kids Comic Con 2013 with Alex Simmons

In the past 2 weeks I did 2 comic conventions in the Bronx and want to rate them against each other.  The first was the Bronx Heroes Con May 4th and 5th, and the other was the Kids Comic Con May 11th.  One I lost a ton of money on, the other I did ok.  Here's the scoop:

Bronx Heroes table cost:  $150  VS.  Kids Comic Con table cost:  $35

Money I made at Heroes:  $55  VS.  Money I made at Kids:  $60

There's the difference!  Losing $95 at Heroes VS making a small profit of $25 at Kids Con.  Now, last year at Heroes I spent the same $ for table and made $40 selling my comics for only $1.  I thought I did pretty well for my first convention.  But a year later I would've thought I'd do better by more than a $15 difference and still lose money.  I was talking with some other vendors at Heroes and they had similar results.  I think the only people who did well were the people who sold the perlor bead design things for like $1 each.  Here are some things I think may have affected Heroes:

1.  It was on Free Comic Book Day (the first Saturday in May).  Many people on Saturday thought all the comics were free, but why should you PAY for comics if you can get other comics for free?  Next year, I'm not doing a con on free comic day.  I might participate in an event in a comic shop or something, but not pay for a table in a convention.

2.  It was in a library.  In the far Bronx.  Most of the people that came by said they had just stumbled upon that convention from being in the library.  When you go to a library, you get books you can read for free (granted, not to keep, but you're not paying for them).  I think the mindset of people is different when entering a library vs entering a comic store, for example (like I said earlier, I did better at Carmine St. Comics grand opening in one day vs 2 days at Heroes).

3.  Even though there were some bursts of traffic, it was swarms of kids that didn't buy anything.  Of course, it's always good to teach them things about comics, and I'm always happy to answer questions - they were all very curious.  I suppose Heroes is more of a convention for you if you've already "made it" in the industry, have money to lose, and your main goal is to educate kids.  I wouldn't recommend Heroes for someone just starting out.

There were also long periods of time when there just wasn't much traffic at Heroes.  Sunday was especially dead.  I asked the person who ran Heroes and said "Hey, I know it's a lot of work to run a convention, but where is all that money going to?  Does some of it go to the library?  Does some go to you?  I just don't understand why a con this size should cost $150."  (To compare, MoCCA Fest, which is a HUGE event, cost $200 for half a table.  Heroes wasn't nearly to that scale or fame though).  He said some of it went to the library, but most went to advertising.  Just for the heck of it, I called the Bronx Fordham Library just now and asked them how much it would cost to have an event there for the weekend.  Basically, they said they only hold library sponsored events.  So I asked if that comic event was sponsored, did that mean they got the space for free?  The lady said she couldn't give out that information.  Interesting.

Also, if we do the math, I'd say there were about 20 tables at Heroes.  If they all paid $150 each, that's $3,000.  Let's say some went to the library, like $500.  Even so, that's still $2,500 for advertising which, in my opinion, wasn't that effective.  Like I said above, most people at Heroes just stumbled upon it because they were already at the library, with very few people making the convention their main destination.  I heard Heroes was advertised on tv, which can be pricey.  But I noticed even the fliers they handed out and posters online didn't mark the address of the library - I had to find it through the library site.  Now, I haven't run a convention before, but I'd say Heroes could learn a lot from Alex Simmons, who ran the Kids Comic Con.

Both conventions were in the same area of the Bronx (only 2 stops away).  Kids Con was even bigger than Heroes.  Kids Con had cool special events, like a competitive pictionary-like comic game.  It was an all-around good convention.  And even though I didn't make a ton, it's way better than losing $.  I also got to network a lot too.  I did notice though, that some larger companies like Viz and Archie were giving away free graphic novels (I suspect leftovers from Free Comic Book Day the week prior), so that hurt a bit in that nobody bought my $2 mini comics.

In retrospect, for both Heroes and Kids Con, I'd say bring tons of stuff you can part with for free.  Not just free fortune cookies or candy, because they'll be eaten and forgotten, but free comics that will stick with the children and leave them wanting more.  If you can afford it :P  But all in all, Kids Comic Con WINS hands down because of low table cost!  Low risk for people just getting into the business.  Granted, your stuff does need to be "kid friendly."  (I didn't display the first Misfortune Cookie comic because it has a swear word on the first page.)

In Heroes defense, I think last year's location was much better - it was held at the Bronx Museum, right by Yankee's Stadium, which was easier to get to from Manhattan and, being in a museum, I feel like people value art more.  They also had a blood drive going on, which they didn't do this year.  I know the goal of the Heroes Con is to bring comics to kids who may not have seen them otherwise - it's all about outreach.  It's a great cause, and the organizer is very passionate about it - I know him personally and he's a nice, down-to-earth guy.  Who knows, other artists and I may have inspired kids to keep drawing, which is super awesome!  But hey, if Heroes continues to be $150 a table, they're not going to have a convention if no vendors are willing to pay that.  Word gets around.  Next year, maybe I'll sign up to have a lecture or something, but I won't pay for a table if it's that expensive.  Some people may not view me nicely for focusing so much on the money aspect of comics, but hey - when I moved to NYC I made it my goal to become a professional cartoonist.  It's true that charity events are important, but you won't get ahead in your career doing just those.  I wish more artists looked upon their careers as being worth more, because we ARE worth just as much as any lawyer, doctor, scientist, etc and should be valued by others as such.

Some drawings I did from each con:

Carmine Street Comics Studio

Mindy Indy at the Carmine Street Comics studio space. Hey peeps!  Tuesday was super nice at Carmine Street Comics.  The picture above shows more of what their little studio set up is like.  The artist sits on that elevated platform in the front window of the store.  I was actually successful at luring some curious new people into the store!  (well, "luring" may not be the best word, but you know what I mean).  The desk space is just big enough for me to work on my comic pages.  That day I worked on drawing and inking the weekly comic I do for the Dysautonomia Foundation - No Tears:  Life With FD.  It was super great and super chill drawing at that space.  I had a nice big window, the door was open and let in the fresh spring air, but best of all - I got to talk with comic peeps every so often!  Saw some friends, met some new people, talked about comic stuff.  MUCH better than just working on stuff alone at home and going stir crazy (and more productive too, since it's not easy to climb up and down from there all the time, I'm not distracted).  And hey, I even sold a book, so that was a nice extra bonus!

Each day Carmine St. Comics has rotating artists drawing in the window.  Today (Thursday) is Ellen Stedfeld's turn.  Friday is Sean Von Gorman's turn, and he's having a special party event.  He has a book out:  The Secret Adventures of Houdini.  Sean usually does an escape act of some kind during his events.  In his own words: "When I crash a party ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN!"  So stop by Carmine St. Comics this Friday May 10th anytime from 2pm to 10pm to witness the insanity.  I may or may not be there (gotta prep for Kids Comic Con THIS WEEKEND).

Also, Carmine St. Comics Community Showcase is going on next Wednesday May 15th 11am-10pm!  ALL of the daily window artists will be there at some point of the day sketching, signing, partying, having an all-around good time!  Special prizes available to customers of the store!

All this awesome stuff going on at 34 Carmine St. in Manhattan off the West 4th stop.  Look for the big green awning that says Imperialist Bookstore, and the Carmine St. Comics sign will be underneath it.  GOOD TIMES!

Carmine Street Comics Going Strong!

Carmine Street Comics Last Wednesday was a great success for the opening of Carmine Street Comics!  A big crowd was steady from the afternoon onward.

mindy indy at Carmine Street Comics

I was sketching outside for the most part.  (Later on, I had to condense my drawings plastered all over the window.)  It got super cold in the evening and I had to borrow a coat :P

Ellen Stedfeld Carmine St Comics

My friend Ellen Stedfeld sketched in the small studio space the store had in the front window area.  The owners said they'll have "resident artists" on a rotating basis every day in the store!  My next day will be TOMORROW, Tuesday May 7th, ALL DAY!  Come for a sketch, check out the new store, chat, and/or hang out.  I'm excited about this new work space!

Carmine Street Comic Owners Michael Novo and Jon Gorga

Here are the proud owners of the store:  Michael Novo (left) and Jon Gorga (right).  What's extra cool is that hey, they're my age and owning a freakin' store.  You can do anything in life you put your mind to!  Of special note:  this store space is shared by Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books, that's been there like forever.  To save on rent (cuz hey, it's in the Village) that bookstore rented out 1/3 of their space.  Life in New York:  finding creative ways to make things work!

Can you tell that Sonic & Knuckles are my favorite?  (And they always have been!)

So be sure to stop by Carmine St. Comics on Tuesdays to check out my work!  See you tomorrow!  34 Carmine St. by the West 4th station.

Oh yes, and I did the Bronx Heroes Comic Con this past weekend.  Didn't go so well for me and other artists, but more on that later.  To be honest, I did better at this one event at Carmine Street Comics (and I wasn't even there the whole day!).

NYCBM Recap

New York Comic Book Marketplace Last week, NYCBM was MY MOST SUCCESSFUL SHOW YET!  There was a great crowd and I was sketching non-stop!  It was really fun talking with everyone and am glad everyone loved their sketches.  I did a sketch for Rosemary Kiladitis who featured me in her blog!  Here are some cool sketches I did:

Gosei Megazord Mindy indy

I made a sign that said I colored for Power Rangers Megaforce and printed some sample pages (with permission from Papercutz), so I got some kids interested in Rangers sketches!  This is the Great Gosei Megazord.  All the rangers have their Zord robots that combine to form this big one (similar to how Voltron works).

Big Gay Al as Star Sapphire

One guy wanted a combination of Big Gay Al (from South Park) with Star Sapphire.  ROCK ON!!

Face Pom

This lady wanted her face on my pomeranian character of Sir Leonardo Zeus Armageddon (page 3 of The Misfortune Cookie #1).  So funny :D  Kind of looks like a sphinx too.  I love when people have such creative requests!

Deadpool Cover Sketch mindy indy

One guy had me draw a funny Deadpool scene on a special blank variant cover.  I'm honored!

Batman Family Portrait

One girl wanted a family portrait of Batman, Robin, and Alfred.  So sweet!

Also did lots of Adventure Time sketches, more Deadpool, and a cool one of Yoshi but no time to post them all!  If you don't see your sketch here, but want to share it with the world, feel free to post it on my facebook page.

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who came by my table!  Great meeting everyone and I appreciate your support!

MoCCA Fest Recap

MoCCA Fest 2013 Finally starting to recover from the weekend craziness that happened at MoCCA Fest!  A very intense weekend - there was a great turnout for both days of the convention.  This year it was run by the Society of Illustrators and I saw lots of improvements in compared to previous years:  the red curtains not only divided the space nicely but provided some "wall space" for exhibitors to pin artwork to.  There were nice banners clearly marking the aisles.  There was a super delicious free dinner for exhibitors and volunteers on Saturday (much needed, since everyone was exhausted and starving by the end).  They were also very helpful to me when I had a problem (more on that, read on) Basically, the Society of Illustrators rocks!

Mindy indy at MoCCA Fest 2013

I shared a table at this con, because it was pretty expensive.  Had as much space to work with as in NYCC (about 3 feet wide).  I learned the hard way that even though you do save money up front in table cost for half a table, you sacrifice visibility and accessibility, which results in not as many sales.  It so happened that a group of exhibitors in my area was blocking my table for most of Saturday.  Their strategy was to have 3 to 4 people standing in the aisle, getting people's attention and driving traffic to their table.  Some of them were right in front of my space and some in the middle of the aisle but I saw people going around them and missing my table.  While this strategy worked well for that company, it really hurt my sales (I've done enough cons to know I should've been making more money for a con that size on a Saturday).  I kept asking each of them if they could please move, and they did, but the same thing kept happening all day.  I know this group didn't intentionally mean any harm to me, and they seemed like nice people, but the fact was they weren't mindful of their neighbors and were hurting my business.

At one point I got in the aisle in front of my table and did the same thing - tried handing out free cookies but people didn't want any.  I tried holding some mini comics out and had a few people interested, but it was very stressful and I felt like one of those people in Times Square that hassles you to buy something on the street - I didn't like it at all.  Most importantly though, why was I paying $200 for half a table when I'm not even at my table?!  There were some people just walking around with their comics on a tray and sold stuff that way - all for the price of admission - $15.

The next morning (it was a 2 day con) I explained the situation to Anelle Miller, who organized MoCCA Fest and is head of the Society of Illustrators.  I love this woman - she was able to track down an empty table and had 2 volunteers help move all my stuff there!  I felt like Anelle and others that ran the fest really cared about me and wanted me to have a positive experience.  I'm totally thankful to everyone that had a part in helping me out!

I did AMAZINGLY WELL that day!  I made over twice the amount I did on Saturday (enough to cover my table cost and a small profit!), and Sundays are supposed to be the slow days at cons.  Made me wonder how well I could have done on Saturday if I had my own table.  One guy who saw me both days pointed out that my sign was much more visible at the bigger table - he didn't even notice it the previous day.  I think the best part was that I was much more happy and relaxed because people had plenty of space in the aisle to walk up to my table casually and browse my merch without any pressure.  An added benefit was my friend Ellen got to expand her corner of our previous half table to all of the half table, and she sold some stuff that day.  I also helped exhibitors next to me at the new location just by occupying a previously empty table (vacant tables pose loitering problems and dead space - people tend to not look at things near empty tables as much).  So it worked out for everyone in the end :)

I learned from that experience that life presents you with all kinds of obstacles and challenges that you have no control over, but you CAN control how you react to them.  If you find yourself in a situation like this, don't just sit there and be like "oh well, there's nothing I can do."  First talk kindly yet firmly to the person/people interfering with you.  If the problem persists, get help from a person running the convention/art show/event and they'll find a better solution.  This situation isn't all that uncommon - I had a little bit of it at NYCC too (mostly friends of one exhibitor next to me just hanging around), but not to this extent.  I'll add this experience to my lecture "Get Started:  Selling Your Comics at Conventions!!!" on Saturday, April 20th, at Super Heroes for Hospice in West Orange NJ.

Here are some sketches I did.  This guy is writing a story about tiny people.  He wanted the artist to draw themselves in the picture as a giant doing something mean to a tiny person (him in the picture).

This girl wanted me to draw her driving a monster truck.  I love random fun requests like that!

Thank you all very much to everyone who stopped by my table!  MoCCA Fest was a success thanks to all you peeps :)  I had a great time overall and am looking forward to next year's fest!

MoCCA Fest THIS WEEKEND!

Super excited to be a part of one of the biggest and coolest indie comics festivals in America!  MoCCA Arts Festival will be held this weekend, April 6th and 7th, from 11AM to 6PM.  It's in Manhattan at The 69th Regiment Armory, 68 Lexington Avenue (between E. 25th & E. 26th Street), New York, NY 10010

Just take any train that connects to the 6 train and get off at 23rd St. or 28th St, as shown above.

My table is F194.  When you walk in the entrance, just go to the left-most aisle and walk to the back.  I think it's a good spot to be, because I've always walked the perimeter first before going to the middle.  Hopefully we'll get lots of traffic.  This is a fairly large convention, but nothing as crazy as NYCC so I'm not worried about being in the back.  I'll be sharing a table with Ellen Stedfeld and Pronto Comics.

Advance ticket purchase will end
tonight at midnight!
Advance Ticket Price: $12/day, $15/weekend
Door Price: $15/day, $24/weekend
Also check out some of the great panels and presentations going on this year!  Gonna be super fun and hope to see you this weekend!

Oh we all love the holiday specials, but have you seen these gems?

2 Shows, 1 Night: Recap

Last Saturday was pretty crazy - I had the Crohn's disease fundraiser/Arts Party, then the Gowanus Nite Market on the same night!  And after working a day job too!  If I thought about it all at once, I got freaked out, so I had to just take it one step at a time.  Luckily my energy held up pretty well throughout the night and it was successful overall.

Sky Room, where the fundraiser was at, is a pretty fancy place!  We were on the 34th floor I think, and the views were great.  I set up my table as usual, but this event didn't have much traffic flow like comic conventions or GNM - it was about 35 people standing around talking to each other, and I only did 2 sketches.  But hey, the table was free.  I got to see some friends and a few people I hadn't seen in awhile - some I had met at the East Village Arts Party last summer!

The event raised over $2,000!  That's a big jump for my friend Michelle's goal of $6,900 for her marathon.  Only $3K left to go.  I was glad I could contribute in a small way to this great cause.

I had to leave a bit early (around 9:30pm) and take a cab to the Gowanus Nite Market, already in progress.

GNM was hopping!  I had just gotten there and was setting up when already someone asked me for a sketch.  Off to a good start.

No time to set up my whole table, just had the comics I drew last week, my sign, and The Daily Misfortune books.

New to March's market was 2 bands.  I had missed the first, Adveta, but heard Oceanographer who was awesome!  I noticed that more single guys showed up just because of the bands.  Previously it seemed that most guys at any kind of flea/art market are dragged there by their girlfriends.

I get the most random creative requests at GNM!  A guy wanted a drawing of a school kid with a jar for a head, who was sad all the time because everyone could see inside his head and steal his ideas.

If this looks like Osama Bin Laden, I need to go back to art school.

The friends on the left said I drew the right guy too good-looking.  They suggested adding chest hair.  I added a shaver as well.  BEST SKETCH OF THE NIGHT.

Was it worth it to do 2 events in one night?  Well, I hoped I'd make twice the amount of money, but made less than I would have in one event because I had to miss the prime traffic time of both events.  Next time, I'll just pick the event I think will be most successful, but sometimes you have to try lots of different things because you never know.  Such problems are good to have though - it means I'm getting myself "out there" more.  I wonder what other good problems I'll have in the future.

Shout out to my friend Walter for going to BOTH events!

Crisis

When a person with FD is in "crisis," their body loses control of blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature, among other things.  When talking about drawing this comic with people at the Dysautonomia Foundation, they emphasized the green face because FD people in crisis feel very nauseous.  I suggested also drawing a garbage can next to the bed (like if they needed to throw up).  I learned that people with FD cannot actually vomit because of an operation they all have.  Basically, because they can't swallow normally  (they eat via stomach tube) if they threw up it could get into their lungs be a serious problem, so the operation makes some kind of knot in their intestines (if I'm remembering correctly).  Meeting with the Foundation and asking questions leads to very educational conversations for me and prevents me from making slightly "incorrect" drawings.

Pretty much all of my Daily Misfortunes are like the "crisis" in the first panel of this week's FD comic.  But that's one reason the Foundation wanted me to draw their comics - I can create a somewhat lighter tone to bad situations.

March Gowanus Nite Market

Gowanus Nite Market has released the official flyer for their next event on Saturday March 16th.  I'll be arriving at 10pm because I'm coming from another event (the Crohn's disease fundraiser at Sky Lounge).  This time, GNM will be held at Gowanus Loft 61 9th Street, Loft C8, Brooklyn.  There will also be live bands as well as DJ Chela.  Also new is beer!  As always, GNM is FREE.  RSVP here.  Hope to see you at one or both events!  Oh and GNM hours are extended until 2am!

Btw I didn't design this flyer, I did another version which they'll use for the next one.  But look, my name is up there!

Black Mountain Wine House

Black Mountain Wine House Things are coming together for the next Gowanus Nite Market in March - stay tuned.  In the meantime, get your Gowanus fix at Black Mountain Wine House.  The next in my Gowanus Love series, this has to be the most romantic setting yet.  The best feature of Black Mountain is the fireplace - I love the coziness and campfire smell.  It's a very welcome environment from the harsh windy coldness of winter.  The lights are dim and walls are lined with bottles of wine.  Michael, the manager, said his favorite wine is tempranillo.  He also gave a little history of the venue - the building started as a pharmacy, then a bakery, an artist's gallery, and now the Wine House.  Black Mountain also has a kitchen that's open until midnight, serving tapas and a variety of cheeses.  Come on a Tuesday for "Fondue Tuesdays."  Come on New Year's and drink out of a gigantic wine glass that's about 2 feet tall!

Black Mountain Wine House 415 Union St (between Smith St & Hoyt St), Brooklyn, NY 11231

Also, don't forget to come to this event TONIGHT where I'll be sketching:

Sketch Con 2013 Recap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nA2dYkVcOE&feature=youtu.be Here's a good overview of the awesome atmosphere of Sketch Con 2013!  Great crowd and great music.  It was a FIASCO getting there though.  Had to wait 40 minutes for my bus at NY Port Authority (where the buses go to NJ).  I need to learn that they only come once an hour on Sundays.  The bus ride itself was super short, but the bus dropped me off on the side of the road, and since we just had a huge snowstorm, the sidewalk was covered in a foot of snow.  I had to trudge my suitcase and all my crap down the slushy street for 10-15 minutes.  Luckily there wasn't much traffic, but I kept thinking "The things I do for my passion!"  I can think of a lot of people who would've just turned around, but I'd already gotten that far.  I'm SO GLAD it turned out to be worth the trouble!  Even though I arrived late, the crowd was just picking up.  I had to get the smallest table though:

But I made it work.  Y'know, the more shows I do, the more stuff I have on my table.  I focused on the sketches.

First sketch of the day:  adorable baby!  To save time, I'm not going to post all my sketches.  Even though I love doing this blog, the convention posts are taking too much time (gotta touch up all the pictures, crop, resize them, write something witty, etc).  I really gotta focus more time on creating art and getting more work, so I'm going to only post a few sketches.  If you don't see your sketch here but would like to share it with the world, you can upload it to my mindy indy facebook page.

mindy indy sketch of 4 friends

Yes, they all held perfectly still for 20 minutes while I drew them!.... No not really, I took the picture first :P

A couple wanted me to start with a picture of their friend's dog, and then get creative with it.  The answer = a flying doggie!  I wish my camera took better pictures.  I was in a rush and couldn't tell if it was blurry on the small camera preview screen :/

So the theme of this convention was supposed to be "Fairy Tale Nightmares."  Evil Tinkerbell is my interpretation.  Creepy, I know.  I don't think many other people went with the theme, but it's a good starting point.

Sketch Con was super successful and it was totally worth the trip there.  I just have to think of more efficient ways of getting to NJ... I only know so many people with cars, y'know :P

Which is why I didn't drink any whiskey at the Whiskey Cafe.  I can't get any work done if I have alcohol.  This of course doesn't apply to some of my friends who can mysteriously work BETTER with booze.

GNM 2 Recap

We had a CRAZY AMAZING turnout at last Saturday's Gowanus Nite Market - 2,000 people!  That's up like a zillion % from last time, which was 400 (I estimate with math, ok?).  Everyone was saying there was a line out the door that stretched to the end of the block!  I'm so grateful to be a part of such a cool growing scene in Brooklyn.

As always, I loved meeting lots of people, seeing friends, and drawing for others.  Thanks to everyone who came out and stopped by to talk, sign up for my mailing list, and/or get a sketch :)

I loved how all the Gowanus letters looked together!  It's like a rainbow.  It was funny how the church in the S looked practically upside-down :P  I'm going to work with the market organizer to sell the project as a set to a local Gowanus non-profit or organization - fingers crossed.

My first commission was from an Australian girl that was traveling.  She wanted me to draw anything that I felt was truly "New Yorkian."  I thought of the Statue of Liberty, dancing, the Empire State Building, and the Chrysler Building.

She was really happy with it!  I'm glad I could contribute in a unique way to her New York adventure.

One girl wanted me to draw from a picture she had of her and her pugs.  Super cute!  She also had a pic on her phone of them dressed for Easter :)

That drawing took a bit longer than usual, but I'm glad that more people want the larger sketches.  I think this one takes the prize of best sketch of the night.  She was super happy with the result too :)  Although, I've never had a person that didn't like their sketch (knock on wood...)

Did portraits!  Cranked this one out pretty quickly.

This dad wanted a drawing of his son.  One of the cutest kids in the world!

People really love drawings of their dogs!  As a dog lover myself, dogs are always fun to draw.  One time this girl (Daria) fit her 2 HUGE dogs (Newfoundlands) into her tiny car by pushing the back seat down.  Daria was actually one of the vendors sitting next to me!  She's a graphic designer for The Vanity Project, which makes cool clothes for non-profits and donates 51% of net profits back to each featured organization.

I had such a fun time at this month's GNM, even though it was intense and I had very little sleep (but that's how I do most of my shows!).  I was slightly more successful this time around too :)  I feel like this market will blow up soon (as in, become really popular, not the other kind of blow up).  This is a very exciting time for mindy indy!

Gowanus Nite Market Recap

Finally I get around to writing my blog!  This past week I not only had to get stuff ready for the Gowanus Nite Market, but also do a rush custom comic for a client (more on that next week!).  Here's the recap of all the excitement at GNM.

Each vendor had a unique set up, and luckily I was able to get a good table (not a coffee table) to draw on.  You can see I had all the original drawings that I posted all last week behind me on that board.  No originals sold, but people were interested in prints, so that's coming next month!

I made Christmas cards out of that deer drawing I did.  Those didn't sell, but the people who worked at Film Biz were interested!  Now, onto stuff that DID sell - practically my entire profit was made just from custom sketches!

Did another funny Deadpool sketch for a couple I met at New York Comic Con!

This time I displayed an example of how well I capture people in portraits.  People responded well to it!

Portraits of pets included too.

This one wins most bizarre sketch.  A guy wanted him & his girlfriend riding a sperm whale out of hell with a unicorn.  They liked the extra added touch of the demons chasing them :)

Props to these people for holding their poses so long!

This wins funniest sketch.  A girl wanted a drawing of a tiny monkey riding backwards on a tiny pig, drawn like a family crest.

She loved it SO much that I'm doing more for her whole family!

This guy has always loved Waldo :)

I also held the fortune cookie hunt!  I hid 15 cookies around the venue and gave a free Misfortune Cookie mini comic to those who brought the cookie back to my table.

I hid them in plain sight because there are so many props and stuff in the area!

So many people were bringing me cookies in the first hour, I wondered if I didn't hide them well enough :P  But the hunt was a success!

Had a super fun time at the Gowanus Nite Market, and hope to see you next month:  Saturday January 12.  GNM: the 2nd Saturday of the month!

Gowanus Nite Market

Film Biz Recycling, Gowanus Nite Market

Super exciting news!  My next appearance will be at the Gowanus Nite Market next Saturday December 8!  I'm also the new Social Media Marketer for the Market!  This show is very unique because it'll be held in a place called Film Biz Recycling:  a warehouse chock full of awesome props used in the film industry.  I'm doing lots of drawings in my sketch style for the show, and will be posting one each day this week up until Saturday, where I'll be selling them at my booth.  This flyer has all the details:

I was even mentioned in an article about the Gowanus Nite Market on Brokelyn!!  This is super huge because Brokelyn is THE site to check out where all the cool events in Brooklyn will be!  Yaaaaaaay!

So I'll be posting about the Gowanus Nite Market with more details all this week :)  Please come, because it'll be super fun!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm thankful for many things this year, mostly for being so lucky that Hurricane Sandy didn't do much damage to my area, and glad that even though there was lots of structural devastation elsewhere, many people's lives were saved because of precautions New York City and New Jersey took.  Other things I'm thankful for:

friends and family (of course!)

having heat and electricity

being alive!

that I'm still in my 20s

and lots more!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Super Heroes for Hospice

Super Heroes for Hospice

This Saturday, November 10, I'm exhibiting at Super Heroes for Hospice in West Orange, NJ!  I'm also giving a presentation about how to start exhibiting and selling your comic art at conventions.  Here's more info:

Super Heroes for Hospice

There will also be a "Getting Into Comics" lecture series.  Admission is free, but pre-registration is encouraged to reserve a seat, as seating is limited.  Please register by emailing your request to SBallas@BarnabasHealth.org - include each lecture that you'd like to attend.  On the day of the event, remaining seats will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

mindy indy lecture

I'm super excited to give my first lecture!  I've been working on my power point presentation a lot :)  It'll be super awesome and informative!  It'll be great to meet all the other fascinating comic artists too.

The event will also hold a canned food drive for communities hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy.  Donations will go to Last Resort Emergency Food Pantry (Asbury Park, NJ).  Super Heroes for Hospice attendants can pick a free comic for every canned good they bring (limit 5 per attendee).

In the aftermath of Sandy and now the Nor'easter storm, things have been grim for many people.  If you can make it, please come to Super Heroes for Hospice to help in a small way by donating food or getting comics for a family you know that has lost much - because besides needing the basics to survive, people also need to be cheered up!
