This happened last night. Oh and one of the guys was married.
When a person with FD is in "crisis," their body loses control of blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature, among other things. When talking about drawing this comic with people at the Dysautonomia Foundation, they emphasized the green face because FD people in crisis feel very nauseous. I suggested also drawing a garbage can next to the bed (like if they needed to throw up). I learned that people with FD cannot actually vomit because of an operation they all have. Basically, because they can't swallow normally (they eat via stomach tube) if they threw up it could get into their lungs be a serious problem, so the operation makes some kind of knot in their intestines (if I'm remembering correctly). Meeting with the Foundation and asking questions leads to very educational conversations for me and prevents me from making slightly "incorrect" drawings.
Pretty much all of my Daily Misfortunes are like the "crisis" in the first panel of this week's FD comic. But that's one reason the Foundation wanted me to draw their comics - I can create a somewhat lighter tone to bad situations.
Gowanus Nite Market has released the official flyer for their next event on Saturday March 16th. I'll be arriving at 10pm because I'm coming from another event (the Crohn's disease fundraiser at Sky Lounge). This time, GNM will be held at Gowanus Loft 61 9th Street, Loft C8, Brooklyn. At Sketch Con in February I was interviewed by ZAPP Comics! I'm towards the end of the video. Oh man, I sound like a total ditz though! I was running on like 2 hours of sleep and exhausted from schlepping all my suitcases and crap through the snowy streets. But anyway, this is out there in the cyber world. It's great to be interviewed, but I need to keep in mind to sound more professional next time.

This practically happened to my sister yesterday.
Last week I posted about the arts event to raise funds for crohn's disease research on March 16th. I found out the next Gowanus Nite Market is ALSO the same night! Luckily there are only a few hours overlap, and GNM has been extended til 2AM. I was frazzled about this at first, because why do the only 2 events I have in March have to be the same night. But it's good that I have lots of things going on, and the more involved I get with new things, that's going to happen.

I'll be in another art show on March 16 - a fancy one in Times Square! My friend Michelle Kafel is running in a marathon to raise funds to help research for Crohn's disease, which her boyfriend Jordan suffers from. Even though I LOVE Beavis & Butthead, if I was hoping for a romantic candle-lit dinner, I'd be peeved. Also, I wrote this misfortune from a girl's perspective, but the guy is still there in the comic, so I changed his response. This would definitely be a good fortune for guys :)
And you thought YOU had a lot to pack! People and families living with FD have a gazillion other medical things to bring.
This is true in my case. I graduated from the University of Michigan and in NYC, people haven't heard of it and think it's some podunk school (even though it's one of the "Big 10"). If I had gone to SVA on the other hand, that would matter more. Just gotta keep learning throughout life.
In my quest to find nice romantic spots in Gowanus, I found Bar Tano on 3rd Ave. I was struck by the gorgeous tin walls and roof of the place (no, the tiles didn't literally fall and hit my head, but you know what I mean!). I've always loved seeing elegant tin roofs in NY - a sign the building must be about a century old. Of special note: the decorations on the top of my drawing look like little upside-down hearts! Fits the Gowanus Love theme in so many ways.
I talked with Gaston, Bar Tano's general manager, who said 4 years ago Bar Tano was one of only a few venues in Gowanus (a real trail blazer for the area). "Tano" is the nickname of the owner's uncle. The bar has Sicilian-inspired food that's affordable. Take your Valentine there for Salmone Tartare, Bucatini al Pesto, or Zuppa di Pesce. The kitchen is open late, which is awesome. Looks like the bar has a great selection of Italian wines and other spirits. Overall, Bar Tano has an old-world, classy, romantic atmosphere.

Unfortunately, this predicament just happened to my apartment.
Yesterday while en route to Sketch Con in New Jersey, the bus dropped me off on the side of the road and I had to do this for like 15 minutes. The sidewalk (if there was one) was covered in a foot of snow from the blizzard we had on Friday. I kept thinking "why am I doing this?" but the con was a big success so it was worth it :) Pictures to come later this week!
I had to go to 4 stores today before I actually found it. Does McCormick not make chili mix anymore?? Or just not distribute it in NY?
I'm happy to say that "No Tears" is approaching virality on Facebook! Almost every person that "liked" the comic also "shared" it! People really related to this particular comic.
