Working With Writers

"Computing" by Writer Patrick McEvoy and Artist Mindy Indy

"Computing" by Writer Patrick McEvoy and Artist Mindy Indy

Here's another one-shot comic page I created with writer Patrick McEvoy!  I love his techie futuristic themes.  Also, couldn't help throwing in another disco-ball pattern in the computer room in the first panel.  (Side note - the window and last panel colors were inspired by Sonic 2's Oil Ocean Zone).  It's great that Patrick is cool with whatever I come up with, as writers should allow freedom for the artist to do what they do best!  He was also open to suggestions I had for making the second panel two separate panels, so it's more clear that we are zooming into the computer's circuitry.

The Papercutz team on the Charmz School panel at NYCC 2016!  Left to right:  Sven Larsen (marketing), Jeff Whitman (editorial), Janice Chiang (letterer), Mindy Indy (penciler/inker/colorist), Amy Chu (writer), and not pictured is Jay Jay Jackson (penciler/inker/colorist) who joined us later in the panel!

Working with others was one of our discussion topics on the Charmz School panel at NYCC.  letterer Janice Chiang and writer Amy Chu talked about how they worked together on many projects over the years, as writing and lettering are very intertwined.  Jay Jay Jackson and I are both "triple-threat" penciler/inker/colorists, so we talked about our experiences working with others, but also benefits of being sole creators of comics.

NYCC's line up of panels was MUCH better than last years!  I targeted other writing panels too, as I'm working on rewriting AER HEAD, and panelists kept suggestingfor writers to start working with an artist on one-page comics before delving into their magnum opus.  This is great, because it helps both writer and artist develop their communications to see if they work well with each other.

This is something that people don't really think about.  Lots of indie creators are just so excited to get their work out there, that they don't take the time to get to know their team-mates working style:  Do they respond to email timely?  If not, was there a good reason?  Do they ask lots of questions to ensure clarity?  If not, they may end up doing extra work over changes.  What is their schedule like?  Do they prefer to work late at night?  All of these things and more can be ironed out with a one-page comic before committing to too much if you realize you're not working well together.

I also work with writers in the FD Foundation and RLS Foundation for our weekly and monthly comic strips.  My first boss for "No Tears:  Life With FD," David Brenner, usually sent me the script and I drew it: easy-peasy.  Occasionally, I'd offer suggestions (like "I don't think a kid would say it that way"), and sometimes he'd agree and we'd change the script, but usually the script stayed "as-is."  My new boss for No Tears, Paul Schack, and also the team at the RLS Foundation are very open to my script suggestions.  They give me the dialogue and I'd sketch it out, realizing that it would be better if some things were changed in the script or action description.  Sometimes it's a back-and-forth process, which leads to a better finished comic!  For example, the No Tears comic above was originally scripted with just the bottom 2 panels, but I suggested we insert a 3rd panel in the beginning giving more explanation that October is Dysautonomia Awareness month.  YAY TEAMWORK!

Jay Jay Jackson and I were talking later on about how we don't like Robert McKee's "Story," a book about screenwriting.  It's supposed to be this really great book, but it's so old that I don't get half the movie references, and the writing is pretty dry.  I have the book sitting next to my bed, for when insomnia strikes it helps put me to sleep.

Creating Comics Workshop @NYCC!

This Thursday 10/6 I'll be part of a panel at NYCC about getting girls making comics!  Charmz School - The Girlcentric Creating Comics Workshop, 4P - 5P, Room 1A18

The line up has changed from what's on the site, which now includes such Papercutz peeps as:  JayJay Jackson (penciler/inker/colorist),  Melinda "Mindy Indy" Steffen (penciler/inker/colorist),  Janice Chiang  (letterer),  Amy Chu (writer), and Jeff Whitman (editorial).

We'll all talk about how we started in the comics industry, then go into detail about each step of the comics process, and everyone can draw along!  Sure to be a girl-tastic time!

"Hey, that panel sounds awesome, but I don't have a ticket to NYCC."  You're in luck!  I just checked the site and tickets are still available for Thursday only!  $40 for the day.  YES it's worth taking the day off work and taking your kid out of school.  Flu season is starting - an easy excuse.  SEE YOU THERE!

All the air vents in my apartment building are connected.  This means I can smell and hear things from other people's bathrooms.  I really hate smelling some nasty overdosed cologne when I'm trying to work or eat.  But I guess it's better than smelling some other things...

Thea Stilton #5 out NOW!

It's finally here!  Papercutz presents Thea Stilton #5 - The Secret of the Waterfall in the Woods!  This was what I spent a solid 2 weeks on last summer, coloring night and day.  I am SO PROUD of how beautifully this book came out!  It's so satisfying to hold a copy in my hands after all that hard work.

Thea has much more detailed shading than when I colored the Power Rangers.  You can see the different Photoshop brush textures I used in the pine needles, trunks, and rocks.  Lots of nature scenes in this book, which has an eco-friendly message.  The five Thea Sisters of Mouseford Academy solve mysteries, and this episode features saving a family of bears in the woods.  There's danger, deception, teen angst, cuteness, and more!

One of the challenges in coloring this book was the sheer number of characters - lots of crowd scenes like above, with many pages having around 30 characters each!  When you're coloring 46 pages on a tight deadline, that adds up.  Luckily, I was able to get a flatter (Matt Herms) to help with half the pages.  Delegation gets stuff done.

I'll be at the IPG booth doing signings and sketches for Papercutz at C2E2 in Chicago!  C2E2 is March 18 - 20, and I'll do a signing each morning, as well as be at my artist alley table i16a the rest of the time.  I'll do a separate C2E2 blog later.  So much going on!  But that's a good thing.

Speaking of books, this Daily Misfortune was inspired by my mom.  Yep, last month is was just her and the librarian.  A die hard mystery novel lover.

Correction and Liability Shift

For the Brooklyn Book Festival this weekend, Papercutz will be in different locations on Saturday and Sunday, and that means other publishers will too.  In yesterday's post, the Metro Tech location is for SATURDAY ONLY, and Papercutz will be at booth #3.  Most Children's Day activities will be going on in the Metro Tech Commons.  Sunday, the main day of the Festival, Papercutz will move outdoors to Booth 308, near the court house, and here's the map.  It'll be beautiful weather this weekend, so hope to see you there!

If you're an indie artist or own a small business and accept credit payments, listen up:  you need to be ready for the "Liability Shift" in 2 weeks.  Basically, credit cards are moving towards having tiny chips inside them instead of the magnetic strip, which will apparently be more secure.  If you have a Square card reader, you have to buy a $49 new reader to accept credit payments.  If you don't, and you swipe a fraudulent card, YOU'LL be responsible for the lost charges, NOT the banks.  It looks like getting the new reader is the way to go because it will protect everyone more.  Granted, Square said they'll reimburse for the reader up to $49 in their fee credits after you use it for 3 months.  However, their fees are very small, and I don't use the reader that much.  I use it once a month for comic conventions, but actually most people pay in cash.  I'm glad to have the Square reader though, because it does help like 20% of the time.  But no way will I charge enough people to make up the $49 in small fees over 3 months, and will probably still end up paying around $45.  So even though I pre-ordered the new chip Square reader, I feel forced into it.

This brings to mind that the way technology is going, we artists have to keep buying more and more expensive tech tools just to keep up.  Adobe's new payment system has me and others locked into paying $50/month for the programs we need, and they have a monopoly because they're the industry standard.  My Mac is pushing 5 years old, and is running terribly show.  I fear the day it will konk out completely, because I can't afford a new one.  This has already happened to some of my artist friends, and it's like a catch 22 - they can't afford a new computer or the programs they need, so then they can't get new jobs in their field.  And because they can't get those jobs, they can't make more money to buy new upgrades.  This is something that seriously scares me and I don't know the solution to it.

Thanks for listening to my little rant :P  But it's the weekend - everything is better on the weekend!

Brooklyn Book Festival This Weekend!

Did you know the Brooklyn Book Festival is this weekend?  Actually, they've been having all kinds of interesting events all around Brooklyn this week leading up to it, and they're celebrating the Festival's 10th Anniversary!  I'll be signing/sketching Power Rangers (and possibly Thea Sisters??  Wow that would be a miraculous turn-around time for that book!) at the Papercutz booth for Kid's Day this Saturday Sept 19 from 3-4pm and also Sun Sept 20 from 2-3pm.  Papercutz is numbered as 308 booth #3, in the Metro Tech Commons.  The address is: 1 MetroTech Roadway, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Saturday has lots of kids programming and activities, like live readings and pop-up book workshops.  There are quite a few comic related events going on too!  George O'Connor is talking about his Olympians comic series along with other cartoonists and authors Saturday at 2pm.  On Sunday at 1p, cartoonists Ayun Halliday and Leslie Stein join 30 Rock actor Judah Friedlander at the Brooklyn Historical Society "for a conversation about creativity, performance and the incessant inspirations of ordinary life, and making light out of the dark in our day-to-day."  More events are scattered around the Downtown Brooklyn area.  And of course there will be TONS OF BOOKS too :)  Actual books.  Like, not on your iPad.

ALL FESTIVAL EVENTS ARE FREE!!

TICKETS ARE NOT REQUIRED
SOME BOOKEND EVENTS CHARGE ADMISSION

In other news, I made a Facebook event for my Super Week comic reading on October 7th!  It's never too early to start planning.  If you're around NYC the day before NYCC begins, come celebrate with me in Bushwick!  Ironically, I'm still on the wait list to get an artist alley table, which makes me nervous.  Hopefully I can squeak in somehow.  If you know of any cartoonists who may be looking to split their table last-minute, please let me know!

As a freelancer, usually every day is different.  I didn't get a headache doing Photoshop for 20 hours a day, but after 4 hours of intense research, correspondence, reading text online, etc, my brain is unsettled.  Probably has to do with the blue light the screen emits.  Which is why reading from an actual book is much better!  Which is why you should go to the Brooklyn Book Fest this weekend!  ;)

Thea Sisters Coloring!

An older, but very cute, Thea Sisters cover.  They have a lot of books out!  I'll post the new cover once it's released.

An older, but very cute, Thea Sisters cover.  They have a lot of books out!  I'll post the new cover once it's released.

I'm back to life after about 2 weeks of the most intense work I've had since art school.  I colored a Thea Stilton book for Papercutz!  The characters are all humanized mice and everything is super cute and they go around solving mysteries and saving nature.  One of their books is even titled "Saving Five Puppies."  THIS IS THE SERIES FOR ME.  The coloring style was more complex than the Power Rangers coloring I did, because there were more textured backgrounds and highlights vs just making a shadow with a solid line.  But it's great learning new Photoshop coloring techniques!

When you work from home, it's important to go outside at least once a day.  I went outside because I kept running out of food :POccasionally just for a walk.  And of course, it was beautifully gorgeous weather every single day I had to be inside working from like 10a-5a (that's not a typo... yes on the good days it was 5 hours sleep).  But after I finished the project, it's all rainy and crappy out like today :/  Why don't I ever get coloring gigs in the winter?  Although maybe in that case, the stir-craziness could be worse, because you want to go outside, but at the same time, don't want to.

But I really like having intense projects like this - I really get into a groove of cranking work out and I'm really proud of the work I did.  It's nice to be just working on one thing for awhile instead of 10 different things.  Although I'm still catching up on the other 9 things...

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers 2 is Here!

The Power Rangers book I colored this summer is out now!  "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Vol. 2:  Going Green" can be found on the Papercutz website (and probably comic stores soon).  Just in time for the Christmas/Hannukah/holiday season!

Here's a sneak peek at some of my favorite pages!  This 2-page spread battle scene took FOREVER to color, but it came out awesome with the rainbow color scheme adding more pizazz.  For battle scenes created in Photoshop, the penciler can copy, paste, resize, and rotate all the little army men, but it doesn't really work that way for coloring - you'll spend a lot of time just trying to get the shapes to match up.  I tried it both ways, and it's just easier to paint the shapes in like normal.

This is the story Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans have been waiting over 20 years for—the untold story of the origins of Tommy—the Green Ranger! How did Rita Repulsa choose this teen over others to wage war against the Rangers? This is the only place to find out.

I gotta say, even though Rita Repulsa is the villain, I REALLY LIKE HER!  She's so funny and awesome!  This is a well written story that even a 30 year old like me can enjoy.

Note to fans: This graphic novel takes place right before the classic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episode “Green with Evil.”

Coincidentally, I had chosen to color the monster green before I knew the story was to be called "Going Green," referring to Tommy being the future green ranger.  But hey, the more green the better!

Coloring water effects are hard!  Papercutz had these 2 pages ready for me to color early on, and I spent lots of time playing with layering and gradients and stuff to make the water look believable and cool.  Came out pretty good!  But then they sent me a lot MORE pages with water (nooooo!).

I'm very excited the new book is out!  And this time I colored the WHOLE 50 page story!  The last story I colored, Megaforce Vol. 3, was divided into 2 stories, of which I colored one 25 page story.

Please get a copy soon and enjoy!

400 Daily Misfortunes!!  WOOHOO!!!

400 Daily Misfortunes!!  WOOHOO!!!

Another reason to buy online instead of going to a mall.  The Bronx Terminal Mall was designed for people with cars, NOT walking.  uuuugggghhhh and it was raining hard today too.  The thing that confused me the most was the 2 street levels.  Upper Manhattan and the lower Bronx had to be built all crazy because the landscape is very rocky and not level.  Well, now I know.

NYCC: More Awesome Each Year!

New York Comic Con was once again very awesome but extremely exhausting!  This year I sketched for a few hours at the Papercutz booth on the main show floor!  My first official signing/sketching block at NYCC - very exciting!  First I was doing medium sized sketches, but then they had me draw on this huge easel to attract attention, and kids got life-sized ranger posters!

Back at my artist's alley table, Nadia and I did even better sales-wise than last year!  Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat, get a sketch, etc!  This year quite a few people said "hey I got a sketch from you 2 years ago and everyone loved it!"  That kind of stuff means a lot :)  Here are my favorite sketches from NYCC:

One cool thing about NYCC is that Marvel and DC make special blank covers for some comics for artists to draw on!  All this guy said was "draw me as Super Man and my wife as Wonder Woman."  This is the quirky kind of drawing you get :)&nbs…

After all that, I had to sleep for 13 hours STRAIGHT.  Only now am I kind of getting back to a normal speed.

I taught the Sketching from Life class on Sunday as part of NYCC's official programming!  My plan was to draw kiwis first (simple object but cool texture), then leaves, than hands.  Since the kiwis I bought were shriveling up, I wanted to wait a few days before the class to get fresh ones.  OF COURSE, Pathmark, the only 24 hour grocery store in my area, was out of them when they said a shipment would be in on Friday!  They are out of season, and I had no time for a kiwi hunt because both my Papercutz signings were first thing in the morning, and stores would be closed by the time the con got out at night Saturday.  ELLESAUR TO THE RESCUE!!!  My friend Ellen got all the kiwis I needed, and the class went really well!

Also, the Ellesaur Scavenger hunt went well too - some people stopped by my booth and got stuff!  I think the hunt has even more potential for next year :)

The Comics Business panel at Berkeley went great today!  I managed to be pretty awake and able to not space out too much considering I got up way early and barely had sleep.  Anyway we were asked great questions and people seemed to like the talk.  The Berkeley peeps are going to edit the final video (with candid interviews included!) which I'll post a link when they send it.

The biz panel was a great way to kick off this year's NYCC!  Although I didn't make many sales today compared to Thursday last year (it's Thursday, which should be considered a "bonus" day), I talked with some awesome people!  Gonna try to rest up for the avalanche that is to come Friday through Sunday.

If you're at the convention this weekend, stop by Papercutz booth 2229 Sat 10A-11A and Sun 11A-12P to get a quick Power Ranger sketch from me!  Also teaching the "Sketching From Life" class Sunday from 2:15-3 in the Family HQ - 1C02 (right below the elevators!).  It's all ages, so don't be shy if you're the only adult there drawing with kids!  Seriously!

And be sure to stop by my table W4 in Artist's Alley with Nadia Burgess!  Fun!

NYCC Appearances

Mindy Indy new flyers, yay!

Mindy Indy new flyers, yay!

This year I'm participating in 4 events for New York Comic Con!  Made these spiffy flyers too :)  Kicking it off is the Geek Week Comics Business Panel, which I posted about yesterday.  Then I'm doing 2 signings for Power Rangers at the Papercutz booth 2229 on the main show floor Saturday Oct. 11th from 10A-11A, and again on Sunday Oct 12th from 11A-Noon.  If you or anyone you know loves the Rangers, come on by and I'll sign your book/Rangers item and do a little sketch :)  Last but not least, I'm teaching a drawing class as part of the "official programming!"  Sunday Oct 12th from 2:15P-3:00P in the Family HQ - Room 1C02 (on the lowest level of Javits).  It's called "Sketching from Life with Mindy Indy."  Here's the description:

Cartoonist Mindy Indy will teach kids of all ages to see the world as their canvas. Kids will start by sketching a variety of objects in front of them, and then later sketch themselves! Sketching is looser than drawing and doesn't need to be "perfect." Students can move at their own pace and just have fun!

Hope to see you there!

You know what I'm talking about.  That ONE box that you've pushed to the side.  Inside it has things that are important, like papers for filing and such, but you don't use them every day, so you put off sorting through it for a week, a month, a year...  In my last apartment, I had one such box that lasted probably more than a year.  Maybe I'll get to this one after NYCC...

Power Rangers Megaforce BOOK SIGNING!

Power Rangers Megaforce Book Signing

SUPER EXCITED to announce I'll be in a book signing this Thursday Sept. 5th!  Power Rangers Megaforce Vol. 3 is now on store shelves everywhere, and I'll be at Carmine St. Comics with Papercutz editor Michael Petranek to sign books and talk with people about what it's like to work on the Rangers series!  I'll also be doing Power Rangers drawings for fans!  We'll be there from 7PM-9PM.  Here's the facebook event.  GET PUMPED THIS IS AWESOME!!!

Haha I just realized this Daily Misfortune doesn't go at all with the Rangers posting.  The people at Papercutz are super awesome and it's been great working with them :)  I tried to think of a Rangers misfortune, but I just go with whatever inspires me at the time.

Power Rangers Megaforce Vol 3 IN PRINT!

Power Rangers Megaforce Vol. 3 Cover SUPER EXCITED to announce the printing of Papercutz' Power Rangers Megaforce Volume 3!  I got some complimentary books ("comps") mailed to me and it's so great to be holding a work I contributed to in my hands!

Megaforce Vol. 3 Credits

Look for me in the credits page as a colorist :)  I'm so happy my name is spelled right!  This is the first job I've done with a large company that has my name in print as "Mindy Indy."  Back when I colored Deadpool Max with Kyle Baker, I was "ghosting" so it was under just his name.

Megaforce Sneak Peek

These are the pages I'm most proud of :)  This is when the rangers call upon their "Zords" and they all combine to form the big Megazord (like Voltron).  Also in this episode, the rangers fight a giant trash monster.  It's pretty sweet!  Power Rangers Megaforce Vol 3 is supposed to be in stores on August 27th, so mark your calendars!

Last week when I was dragging my suitcase in the rain for like 20 minutes, I also had a sandwich with me.  The Subway bag was wet, so I feared the worst.  Luckily, you know how they double wrap the sandwich in paper?  That mostly saved it!

Trust Issues

It always boggles my mind how many people ask me to watch their computer at a cafe while they go to the bathroom or get another drink.  I NEVER trust anyone with my laptop - it's far too precious to me to risk it.  I'm at a cafe today working because I felt too cooped up working for hours in my apartment.  Did I mention I'm coloring a Power Rangers comic now?  It's by Papercutz.  It's a lot of work, but a ton of fun!  Both Papercutz and I will be at the Kids Comic Con coming up in May.  And don't forget to come to MoCCA Fest next week!  Have a great weekend and Happy Easter!

Bronx Heroes Comic Con 2012! Mindy indy's Debut!!

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone that stopped by my table at the Bronx Heroes Comic Con!  I had SO MUCH FUN meeting everyone and was thrilled that people liked my comics!  Seriously, it's one thing when my friends and family say they like my artwork, but it's a whole other level of awesomeness when people I've just met like my work!

It was so fun that people wanted to take their picture with me!  I'm very photogenic, so I totally loved it :)  I felt like a celebrity!

Some young people also asked me to look at their portfolios.  It was great to see everyone's different artistic styles!  It was only 2 years ago that I was the one showing my portfolio around to exhibitors at comic conventions, so please keep at it, guys!

Some of my friends came to see me too!  Rachel came all the way from Park Slope (seriously, it's a long way from Brooklyn to the Bronx!)  You go, girl!

I loved when people wanted me to sign the mini comics they bought :)  I made sure to sign them as "mindy indy" instead of "Mindy Steffen" (my real name).

You may notice some people with blue bandages on their arms - there was also a blood drive at the con.  People were encouraged to donate blood and "be a hero" because it really does save lives.  The con reached their goal of a lot of donors - I forget how many.... but it was totally reached!

I also have to say how awesome it was to be sitting next to Jim Salicrup - he ended up promoting ME more than his own company, Papercutz!  When I first arrived at the con, I was put at a table outside, but all my mini comics and merchandise were flying away, it was SO hot and I was getting sunburnt, and the location wasn't getting much foot traffic.  Not an ideal situation.  I went inside and saw Jim (who I knew from before) and he offered the other half of his table, which was so much better!  Jim even helped bring people to my side of the table and was really hyping up mindy indy!  The way he talks can really draw attention!  I probably wouldn't have met half the people or sold half as much stuff if he wasn't there.  It was truly an honor to have his support.

To give back in a small way, let me say a bit about Papercutz!  Papercutz publishes comics and graphic novels for kids and tweens, featuring classic characters like Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and even the Smurfs (it was a Belgian comic before the animation) and Tinker Bell (ok, I still love Tinker Bell and I just turned 28 :)  Papercutz has a team of writers and artists that create new stories but also publishes foreign comics.  Jim Salicrup is the Editor-in-Chief and always works super hard to bring these comics into the hands of young comic lovers.  He was giving out tons of FREE Papercutz comics at the table!  About half way through the con all the comics had gone, and Jim was just chatting with people about how great mindy indy is :)

Here's a close-up of my table.  I just finished my new mini comic, The Misfortune Cookie!  As you may guess from the title, it's about a fortune cookie that predicts bad things but in a comical way.  I gave away free fortune cookies (the normal kind, not misfortunate ones) which was a great way to tell people about the comic.  Last week I bought a HUGE bag of fortune cookies from a local Chinese restaurant, and it was very difficult for me to resist eating them before the big day!  I was afraid I'd run out of cookies at the con, but I even had a few left over.

I absolutely loved people's reactions to The Misfortune Cookie!  I sold 32 copies at $1 apiece, which was pretty good for the first time selling comics in my opinion.  I'll be posting The Misfortune Cookie in the next blog post!  I'm also excited to think of more misadventures of The Misfortune Cookie - I want it to become a regular web comic.

Also on the table was my Aer Head section.  I sold 6 of those (a harder sell at $2 each, but the printing was more expensive for color).  Some people were really interested for when the graphic novel comes out, and that makes me SUPER EXCITED!  I'll work even harder to finish this 45 page craziness knowing I have the support of others :)  Nobody bought the Aer Head prints (bottom left corner of the pic).  Usually prints are good sellers at cons, but for some reason they just didn't fly.  The Aer Head stickers were a big hit with the kids, though!  I was planning to sell them for 50 cents each, but it was more fun to give them away.  In the middle of the table I had my tally hall comics.  Not one sold.  Strange - fans of the band love it, but maybe "a band with musical super powers" doesn't have much universal appeal?  I also wasn't promoting that as much as the others.  The big draw was definitely The Misfortune Cookie!

Jim drew these cute signs :)  Again, I can't emphasize enough how awesome this guy is!!

All in all, the Bronx Heroes Convention was a success for mindy indy :)  I want to exhibit in more cons!  People say it's addictive, and now I know why.  I'm just glad I finally made another important step towards making my dreams come true :)  Again, many thanks to everyone that visited me at the convention, and I hope to see you again!  Feel free to leave a comment on this blog too.  I added everyone to the mailing list that signed up, but a few addresses were hard to read.  If you signed up on the list at my table and haven't gotten an email from mindy indy, you can always enter your email in the green box to the right and you'll be put on the list.  Thanks!!!
