“In the Trees” by Faze Action! In San Diego I kept seeing trees that looked like they were blowing in the wind, but there was no wind! They’re Hollywood Juniper shrubs! They’re kind of freaky at night but cool. In my comic AER HEAD, I’ll put them in the background along with palm trees. This character, Andy Walker, has the power to grow plants.

FanFaire NYC THIS WEEKEND!

Screen Shot 2019-02-12 at 1.41.55 PM.png

Very excited to exhibit for the first time in FanFaire NYC this weekend with ToughSpirit Creations! It’s at the HIgh School of Art & Design and I’m absolutely blown away by the special guest and programming they have! Art Spiegleman & Neil Adams are both alumni and are giving folio reviews to high schoolers - what an incredible opportunity for youth! I wish I could have gotten to see panels like “Pitch to Screen” and “How To Develop Thick Skin” as a student. But at least I get to exhibit here! Nadia and I are way in the corner, table 500, so if you’re at the show please make sure to check out all the corners XD. Here’s more info:

Jews and Rock Art Exhibit starts Sunday 2/10!

jews and rock brochure cover.jpg

One of my comics will be displayed in the Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery this Sunday! For over 6 years I’ve drawn a weekly web comic for the Dysautonomia Foundation called “No Tears: Life With FD.” FD stands for Familial Dysautonomia, a rare Jewish genetic neurological disorder that effects the sensory and autonomic nervous systems. The comic’s title has a double meaning - one of the symptoms of FD is the absence of overflow tears / corneal drying. The title also encourages FD patients and their families to have hope through their daily struggles. Topics in the comic series range from dealing with specific FD situations, like Crisis, to social scenarios of persons with disabilities, and more. The comic has always had a light-hearted and touching theme focusing on the closeness of families.

steffen-m-a.jpg

This is the comic that will be featured! For the past few years, I’ve been writing the scripts as well, and this strip was inspired by my love of music.

Here’s the eventbrite for the show opening.

Info for Jews and Rock.

Facebook event

Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery: Congregation Kol Israel, 603 Saint Johns Place, Brooklyn, NY 11238

The show will run for a month but I’ll be at the opening this Sunday Feb 10 from 1-5pm. Please stop by to hear some panel discussions and see some influential Jewish art! Very excited to be a part of this show!

Surprise! Jersey Shore Con THIS SUNDAY!

jerseyshorestarwars.jpeg

SURPRISE! After many years, I’m doing a Jersey show again! If you’re in the NJ area and have missed me, please stop by the Jersey Shore Comic Book Show this Sunday January 27th in Toms River! Apparently it’s “the biggest little con on the east coast,” which reminds me of how Ann Arbor is like a big town but small city. I’ll be taking sketch commissions as always and you can grab a copy of Other Realms, my newish sci-fi comic.

Screen Shot 2019-01-24 at 2.10.52 PM.png

It’s 10a-4p at the Elks Lodge: 600 Washington St.

Hope to see you there for the first comic con of 2019!

Classes for Kids and Adults at CLASSETERIA!

richardsimmons-sweatintotheoldies-inktober-stretch.png

In January I’ll be teaching 2 FUN classes at CLASSETERIA in Bushwick! For adults, a quick one hour workshop called DRAW-FAST-NOW-YES!! Do you want to draw faster?  Are you frustrated by how long it takes to create a nice detailed drawing?  This fast-paced class will help you break out of your perfectionism and sketch on-the-fly!  I’ll take you through a series of exercises (set to music) building upon repetition, speed, and creative thinking.  This class is inspired by my experience sketching at comic conventions, Inktober, and my doodletunes.

DRAW-FAST-NOW-YES!! is Saturday, Jan 12, 2 - 3p, $25

Jayleen.jpg

I’m also going to be teaching Cartooning for Kids! Students will learn the basics of creating elements of a comic, such as character building, styles and usage of word balloons, panels, coloring, and more. The main project will be creating an 8 page mini comic.

It’s a 10 session course starting Jan 7 and running until March 25. We’ll meet Mondays from 3 - 4p. It’s for 3rd - 5th grade and is $350.

Classeteria is a brand new program in Brooklyn and I’m very happy to be getting in on the ground floor. The space is very cute & comfortable, which is great for creativity. Please spread the word if you know anyone with kids in the Bushwick area who would like to participate in Cartooning for Kids or other after school programs at Classeteria. There’s an OPEN HOUSE this Friday December 14th from 5-7pm at 284 Suydam, between Irving and Knickerbocker, 11237. Feel free to drop by - I’ll be there to answer any questions and pass out mini comics!

Since Classeteria is just starting up we need help in getting the word out. Fell free to share this post on social media & everywhere! Thank you and cheers to a fantastic 2019!

Holiday Swing

itsalwayssunny-family-portrait-sketch.png

Yes, YOU TOO could have a lovely family portrait just like this one, as the cast of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia! There are some ads where the cast is all smiling bug-eyed like this :) You’re giving the gift of laughter! Other ideas include the cast of Seinfeld, Modern Family, The Simpsons, and more. There’s still a week to get your sketch order in if you’d like one.

Side note, I’ll no longer be participating in the Brooklyn Museum WinterFest, due to unforseen circumstances.

Wishing everyone Happy Holidays!

Online Store is Open!

Screen Shot 2018-11-27 at 1.49.15 PM.png

Very excited to open my new online store! I have Christmas greeting cards for sale at www.mindyindy.com/greeting-cards ! All 5 of the card designs are based off of last year’s Christmas carol doodletunes (illustrations of songs). Left to right: Carol of the Bells, We Three Kings, Silent Night, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Suzy Snowflake! You can order one card for $5 or a pack of 5 for $20 = buy 4 get one free (+$1 shipping for one and $2 shipping for a pack). The store takes PayPal, which can also take credit cards if you don’t have a PayPal account. Now is the time to start getting cards because Christmas will be here before you know it! The only one that says “Happy Holidays” is Suzy Snowflake - the rest say Christmas.

If you’ve been following me long enough you know how crazy my TO DO lists are, and creating an online store has been on my to do list for YEARS. For awhile I was deciding if I should go with Etsy or upgrade my own Squarespace site for commerce. Etsy is actually a lot harder than it looks. Granted, you have more discoverability on that platform, but I felt that just for starting out, it’s hard to compete with all the other cards out there. For example, people have their cards set up against a fireplace with holly branches and freakin’ hot cocoa with perfect lighting etc. Screw that, I just want to get the thing done! I found out that I didn’t need to upgrade my Squarespace site and can still have basic commerce functionality! I only have a few products after all, that are currently the same size & weight, so I don’t need a complex store. It was fun to build the store and put the descriptions in and learn new stuff about shipping (ALWAYS learning new things as a freelancer!).

Anyway, over time I’ll add more items to the store like mini comics. If you’d like some mini comics for stocking stuffers in the meantime, email me at mindy at mindyindy dot com.

OH and my times at the WinterFest at the Brooklyn Museum are now switched to Saturdays!

Happy Holidays!

WinterFest at the Brooklyn Museum!

winterfest.png

Happy Black Friday! The holiday shopping season has officially begun! Brooklyn has a new mega winter village and holiday market called WinterFest! It’s near the Brooklyn Museum, and in addition to a cute maker’s village where you can buy gifts, they have wine & chocolate tasting, “The Enchanted Tree Maze,” a huge slide, movies, performances, Santa of course, and a special “Vinopolis” tent where other workshops and activities will take place. It really is an extravaganza - families & couples could spend the whole day there.

I’ll be in the Vinopolis tent EVERY SUNDAY from 11a-6p doing sketches and selling my new line of Christmas cards based on carols. WinterFest starts today and goes on every Tues-Sun until New Year’s Eve.

You can get chances to win tickets to the attractions and tastings by following WinterFest on social media and/or using my special code https://wn.nr/h54NPL

Really just take a look at everything on the WinterFest site https://winterfestbrooklynmuseum.com/ … I can’t believe how many cool things are going on there! Oh yes and I heard the tents are heated :) I hope that you can check it out and join the fun!

Holiday Commissions are Open!

bat_snow2-web.jpg

It’s that time of year, there’s a chill in the air, it’s close to Thanksgiving, and you realize “Oh crap, I need to get presents for people!” What better present than personalized artwork? If you’ve gotten a sketch from me before, you know how happy it’s made you and others. (If you haven’t yet, please see my folio) The great thing about custom art is that it’s different each time! Give the gift of awesomeness to your kids when they see themselves as their favorite superhero! Give the gift of laughter to your spouse when they see your pet as THEIR favorite superhero!

No shame in giving YOURSELF a gift too! I’ll let you in on a family tradition of the Mystery Present. On Christmas, we pass around a present that’s untagged and everyone shakes it. Often it’s wrapped very garishly/strangely with many boxes nested inside each other. The first year I think it was my mom that started handing the gift off to people and it ended up being for HER! The gift of laughter! All this is to say that YOU could totally get a custom sketch for yourself and start a mystery present tradition of your own XD

Sketches are 5”x7”. Ink is $40 for one figure +$20 per additional figure. Color is $50 for one figure +$25 per additional figure. Larger sizes like 8”x10” available upon request.

If you want a whole custom comic drawn about how you met your spouse, or your first Christmas or Hanukkah together, or about how your kids are awesome, send me an email to mindy at mindyindy dot com and we can work it out! You can also get your office to pitch in for a custom comic honoring a special leader or coworker.

I take Paypal and credit cards via Square Invoices. Super easy & convenient.

I’m leaving for vacation on December 18, (about a month away from now) so get your orders in ASAP so I can add you to my project cue!

Hope everyone has Happy Holidays!

Philly Zine Fest This Sunday!

phillyzinefest.jpg

I’m exhibiting in Philly Zine Fest again! I did it once a few years ago and am excited to return! It’s always great to do shows that just focus on zines. They’re affordable to exhibit in without relying on sketch art. I like doing sketch art, but creating stories is why I love being a cartoonist.

One day I’ll have to spend more time in Philly though - it’s just been quick day trips both times. The life of a busy entrepreneur!

If you’re in the Philly area, please check it out! Here’s the site: http://phillyzinefest.com/

Doxacon This Weekend!

doxacon2018-flyer_color.png

I just found out about Doxacon a few months ago from my writer’s group. It’s a “Faith & Fandom Convention,” which I’d never heard of before! I knew that Tolkien was Catholic, and C.S. Lewis was Christian, but there are actually many more ways in which faith and fandom overlap. Doxacon a lecture and gaming based con, with topics such as the “God and Comics Podcast Panel.” My friend/writer’s group comrade Alexi Sargeant is lecturing upon “Theology and Teleology in Magic: The Gathering.” I noticed there weren’t any artists at the con and asked him if I could exhibit. Long story short, now I’m the first sketch artist to participate in Doxacon! There are other vendors too like sci-fi authors. This is a great example of a topic I teach in my Business Basics for Freelancers classes: create your own opportunities! If you see a need for something that isn’t there, make it happen!

doxacon-bio.png

I’m very surprised and honored to be at the top of the vendor list on their site! Very happy to participate in this unique convention! In this day and age, I’ll be honest, in the comics world I don’t usually talk about my Catholic faith unless it comes up in conversation (which is rare). As a Catholic artist I often feel like I’m in between two worlds, like a part of each but always having to balance them carefully. But I realized that exhibiting at Doxacon can actually be a great way to begin to dialogue with those who will listen. In light of the devastating shootings this weekend at the Tree of Life Congregation, the First Baptist Church last year, and Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015, people of all religions need to stand up for our faith and not be afraid.

So, if you’re in the D.C. area, please stop by the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral 11/2 & 11/3! The con is open to everyone, not just people of faith. If you’re curious in any way, why not check it out? You may have lots of questions or criticisms about various faiths (related to comics or not) that people are happy to talk to you about.

Diversity Comic Con this THURS & Biz Basics NEXT WED!

diversicon.jpg

There’s a new con in town: Diversity Comic Con at FIT! Celebrating diversity in the comics world! It’s this Thursday 10/11, so if you missed NYCC this is perfect for you - their panel lineup is all the best of what NYCC should have had, such as “breaking in” and “self-publishing.” Since cosplay has had such a boom, FIT is the perfect venue. It’s FREE but you must get a free eventbrite ticket. I’ll be exhibiting at table 41 in the corner near the stage, along with many other diverse comic creators.

FlyerBusinessFreelancerComicStore10-17-18.png

In other news, the next Business Basics for Freelancers class is NEXT WEDNESDAY October 17th from 6-9p at Anyone Comics! I promoted this class like crazy at NYCC, and will at Diversity comic con, so don’t wait til the day before to get a ticket if you’ve been considering it. People always ask “will I have other classes?” and I try to have them once a month, but if you can actually make this time, go for it, because my classes may start to fill up! Thanks!

NYCC Sketches Open

sketch.png

Hey everyone! I didn’t get into NYCC’s Artist Alley unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do sketches! I’ll still be at the convention all 4 days doing sketch work onsite! Please email me at mindy at mindyindy dot com with these details:

What do you want drawn? In color or ink? Are you at the con for just that day or multiple days? See the price list below and note I charge extra per figure. Paypal to mindy at mindyindy dot com. We can email each other about a time to meet and I can give you the sketch onsite! If you prefer cash we can meet up before I start sketching.

orderform.png
prices.png

I’ll also be walking around the convention scoping out interesting panels, promoting my next Business Basics for Freelancers class, networking etc. 2 years ago I didn’t get into artist alley, but I actually made 2 essential connections to my career, so I try to look at the bright side!

If you live in or near Baltimore, get ready for Baltimore Comic Con this Friday thru Sunday! Once again it’s at the convention center near the fabulous seaport. I’ll be at Artist Alley table A255 creating sketch commissions and selling my newest comic: Other Realms! As always, it’s looking to be a great show overall. Here are some panels I’d go to if I wasn’t exhibiting - please check them out and let me know of their awesomeness (my thoughts in parenthesis):

Friday:

2:30-3:30 – INDIE ADVOCATES Presents How to Make and Promote Comic Books in the Social Media Age (I feel like I can always level up on my social media promotion)

Saturday:

2:45-3:45 – Music and Comics (If you’ve been following my doodle tunes, you know I love this combo :)

4:00-5:00 – Creativity & Mental Health – A Roundtable Discussion (These things are often intertwined. I’m glad that more people are exploring this issue and that our culture is starting to take mental health more seriously.)

Hope to see you there!

Creative Problem Solving & Next Biz Class!

Screen Shot 2018-09-12 at 12.05.01 PM.png

I recently migrated my email system from GoDaddy to Squarespace / G Suite and even though it was VERY difficult and time-consuming, I’m happy with the results! I’ve realized time and again that because I’m an independent business woman (and every artist who makes $ off their work IS a business person), I have to do a LOT of problem solving, especially for tech stuff. Without going too much into tech details, what first seemed like a 5 step process kept growing in complexity because each step had at least 10 steps to it, and I had to pivot to find other solutions when the first solution didn’t work. The most difficult part was backing up my outdated GoDaddy Webmail. After trying many solutions that didn’t work, a tech friend suggested exporting only the most important emails and just opening the new G Suite with INBOX 0… a fresh start!

This solution has been SO LIBERATING I can’t believe it. Right away, I started using the magic ARCHIVE button which GoDaddy didn’t have and I never felt a reason to use it in my personal Gmail. I just “starred” important stuff. But the simple act of archiving is another step towards simplifying my life (“simplify” is my word of the year). Notice in the above picture that there is NO NUMBER next to the word “Inbox” on the left? Compare that with the number in the pic below:

My personal Gmail has grown into a monstrocity because I’ve never been organized about email before. I feel like this is a life skill that’s not really taught but everyone just keeps getting more and more emails and then they take over. At one point I did hire an assistant to help me declutter some of my emails, as it was over 10,000 messages in my inbox at one point (Dragon Ball Z reference… “IT’S OVER 10,000!!!!”). But since practicing a new way of organizing emails from the fresh start of my new business email, I’m slowly tackling the monster of my other Gmail.

Organizational skills are a big part of the Business Basics for Freelancers Class, and it’s really at the heart of every task you do. Even though I currently don’t have a section about emails specifically, I’m always changing and updating the class to be better each time I teach it! (But that’s also part of why I haven’t put it online yet - hang tight Michigan peeps and Baltimore peeps). If you or a friend you know is a freelancer in the NYC area who’s struggling with the business side of art, please check out the eventbrite and register:

The next class is Thursday 9/20 in the evening so people with day jobs can make it. Happy to have it at Caffeine Underground once again! Hope to see you there!

Made My First Patreon Goal: IT'S POSSIBLE!

Mindy Indy:  WOMAN OF ACTION!

Mindy Indy:  WOMAN OF ACTION!

I'm so happy to say I've surpassed my first Patreon goal of making $100/month and celebrated by taking my first surfing lesson!  This was important research for AER HEAD, the comic I'm creating, which features surfers.  See how I persevered through fear and how I'll apply my surfing experiences to my comic on https://www.patreon.com/mindyindy

Y'know, when I first started Patreon, I wondered if it could really be possible to make legit money from it because I'm not a famous YouTuber with thousands of fans (which is a large portion of their creators).  But I felt like I had to at least try it!  My Patreon has steadily grown, thanks to the support of family, friends, and fans!  YOU could start a Patreon too.  Anyone could, really.  There are so many categories of creative things people are doing on there.  Even if you have a regular 9-5 job and want to get motivated to do your side passion, I recommend Patreon.  You really have to plan it out well though and consistently post and reach out to people to start to see successful results though.

Do you want to be a part of the Mindy Indy community on Patreon and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on how I'm creating AER HEAD, the story of a surfer who predicts the future in his dreams?  Just go to  https://www.patreon.com/mindyindy  and click the orange "become a patron" button.  Then select the reward tier you want and you'll be able to have access to posts according to your tier!  I'm particularly excited about the next set of "see the present" posts where I'll talk about how I'm directly applying what I learned from my surfing lesson to the comic.

The Evolution of my TO DO wall + Next Business Class!

bizcaffeine.png

The next Business Basics for Freelancers class is here!  I'm trying out a new venue:  Caffeine Underground in Bushwick!  Having it at a cafe is great because you can also get caffeine and food during the session.  Please sign up here:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/business-basics-for-freelancers-tickets-48501544425

So I've been wanting to do a blog post about the evolution of my "to do" wall for awhile, and I have a free post about part of it on my Patreon.  Since the business class is approaching there's no time like the present to delve a little more into it!  Part of the class focuses on productivity and organizational skills, which is at the heart of succeeding at any project.  I don't get into THIS much detail about the "to do wall" in the class but this is my blog and I do what I want :)  The main takeaway from this is to try new and different things with managing tasks and projects to see what work, and what DOESN'T work.

"To Do Wall" #1

"To Do Wall" #1

I read "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and started a "to do wall" like this.  I'm not going to go into the whole GTD method here, but I realized the need to divide tasks into "paid" (teaching, weekly comic) and "unpaid" (cleaning, figuring out computer problems, etc).  I also made a huge category for "unpaid but could possibly lead to $" which as an artist, a lot of things fell under.  There's no guarantee that I'll make a killing at comic conventions, so every task associated with those fell under that category.  Also personal art projects.  In any case, I realized the need to organize this further.

"To Do Wall" #2

"To Do Wall" #2

There, that's a bit more organized.  I divided tasks into time categories, like ones that may only take 15 minutes vs a half hour.  However, you'll see the "career" portion of the wall has a TON of stuff.  Part of GTD is a "brain dump" which means getting everything out of your head onto paper, but the method lacks how to prioritize.  So I ended up having a lot of "good ideas" on my "to do wall" that were very low priority ideas, and they became overwhelming.

"To Do Wall" #3!

"To Do Wall" #3!

TADAA!!  Much better!  Those previous "to do walls" were also from the time I was teaching comics part time, but when I switched to full time freelancing, I had to make a major change.  I got to control how I spent every hour of my day, so what would my ideal day look like?  I go over more of this in the Business Basics for Freelancers class on Tuesday August 21st, from 2-5p at Caffeine Underground, 447 Central Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11221.  Early Bird tickets are $50 online and walk-ins are $55 at the door.  Hope to see you there!

PS:  Hope these "to do walls" weren't too overwhelming.  This method works for me, but you may find a better method that works for you to keep track of tasks.

Patreon and AER HEAD Progress!

Screen Shot 2018-08-01 at 3.39.45 PM.png

Progress on my AER HEAD comic project is going very well!  As for the Patreon itself, as of this posting I'm 38% of the way towards my goal of $100 in the first month, with 2 weeks to go.  If you're considering donating and want to check it out, but are unsure about long-term commitment, remember that you change your donation amount at any time.

I've also added a NEW $50 tier, which is custom art of any AER HEAD character, or you AS one of the characters!  I think my comic con peeps will like this tier, because it's similar to my sketches at comic cons!  If you select this tier, you'll get one 5"x7" original color illustration per month of one character, mailed to you.

I recently did the math on how long this project will take given my current pace.  If I continue working on AER HEAD for 20 hours a week, I can complete issue #1 in ONE YEAR!  I'd be able to do a 6 issue series in 6 years.  But if I don't reach my larger goal by mid-October, I'll need to cut the project's time by half or more to make ends meet, and the project may stretch beyond my 40s.  If you donate, you're not only giving the gift of $, but of TIME as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this blog post or on social media, or email me at " mindy at mindyindy dot com ".  Please help me to raise another $62 by August 14!  Since I'd like to celebrate reaching the $100 goal by taking my first surf lesson (the comic features surfers) I realized I have to achieve this before it gets too cold in the fall.  Every dollar helps, and I really appreciate all the donations!  If you've been following my career and have been inspired in any way, now is your chance to give in the name of art!  Go to https://www.patreon.com/mindyindy and select a fun reward tier and get a behind-the-scenes look at AER HEAD!  Thank you very much!

PATREON LAUNCH!! GO GO GO!!

EXCITING NEWS!!!  I’ve officially launched a PATREON!  Patreon is a crowdfunding site where artists can achieve their dreams by collecting small donations from many people.  My Patreon features a comic series I’ve been working on for FOREVER… called “AER HEAD!”  It’s a sci-fi/comedy series about a surfer who predicts the future in his dreams.  Yes, if you’ve been following me from way back in 2010, you’ll remember my first blog posts featured my process of working on AER HEAD.  See the initial pages here:  http://mindyindy.com/aerhead  The style was too complex to be sustainable though… it was beautiful, but I felt bogged down by it and got caught up with trying to make a living in NYC.

This year, I realized I needed to SIMPLIFY many areas of my life, including AER HEAD’S style & my process of working on it.  I’m finally at a point in my life now where I can dedicate legit time chunks to move forward with this comic series, but I need your help to do this long term.  Time is money, and in order to dedicate more time to this comic I need more sustainable funds.

NEW AER HEAD promo mini comic!

NEW AER HEAD promo mini comic!

I’m inviting ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE, especially those who’ve followed me since the very beginning and wondered what the hell happened to AER HEAD over the years, to please donate and become a patron on my Patreon.  Please go to https://www.patreon.com/mindyindy and click the big orange “Become a Patron” button, select a “reward tier,” & connect with Paypal.  The process is so user friendly that even my parents figured it out easily!

Every donation helps me toward my goal of getting this whole comic series out of my head and into the world!  Once you donate, you’ll be able to see my progress on everything from writing, sketching, drawing, inking, digital & watercoloring (I simplified it from all watercolors to half digital/half watercolor) and more.  My blogs here on mindyindy.com are more event focused these days, so think of my Patreon as another blog exclusively for AER HEAD.

THANK YOU SO MUCH & I truly appreciate your support!  And even if you can’t donate at this time, please forward this info to a friend you think will like it.
